Rebuild Kits

Recommended Posts

I have been looking for a kit to rebuild my engine and have had very bad luck. I found 1 place that is supposed to have a complete kit from cam to pistons. I was told they had to look into this kit due to some parts are hard to come by now.

I have a 1976 L28 that is going 20 over needs new cam. I really want flat top pistons (not going turbo) to go with the N47 head that I have. I need a new cam to run well with the fuel injection that I have.

I am looking for a good place to buy this stuff. I have checked MSA and VB along with the local shops NAPA, AutoZone ect. I have gone to my dealer and looked into it but cost is crazy for these Items. If any body has knowledge of a place or has extras to sell I would love to hear about it.

I can't vouch from experience, but I have been compiling resources for rebuilds.

I definitely would not buy anything from your local Autozone or anyone else becuase it's too easy to spec the wrong thing let alone quality. Most people overdo cam profiles and induction and you want to get it right the first time.

Topend Perfomance and Rebello Racing seem to have the reputation for knowing about Zcars.

A couple of other resources might be Paeco Industries http://www.paeco.com or Sunbelt http://www.sunbeltperformance.com

They have a good rep too and they're closer to you.

Good Luck:stupid:

Ok, so I have done a little more checking around for a master kit. I have found a place out of Alabama that will get a complete kit, Pistons, Cam, Bearings, Gaskets and all that jazz. The name of this place is HI-TECH http://www.hi-techengine.com/index.htm

From what I was told by the service rep, was the parts are put together from different brands and sold in one kit. Bearings are Clevite, rings are Hastings (moly set) ect ect. So it seems like most of the parts are good quality brands. Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this place and used there products? The kits is going to cost 927.00 and the part number is NI2753MJ03. It is for the 81 to 83 non-turbo.

Most (if not all) pre-assembled "kits" will be done this way. I'm not aware of any companies that make all the stuff themselves, so they are all pick-n-choose.

A quick question - why are you worried about finding a "kit" rather than just ordering the various parts separately? That way you are certain that you get the parts you want, not just what someone else thinks you need.

Right now I want just a kit to get this other engine going. Something fun and enjoyable. The car is a daily driver now and has an engine that burns oil pretty bad. Once the new engine gets finished and in the car the other engine will be the one that gets all the LOVE if you know what I mean. I am tired of a quart of oil every other day LOL. This engine build is for a fun driver right now.

My plan is to have a car that has 2 engines. One for the track and one for the street. I will have the fuel harness unplug at the firewall and be able to pull the engine in about 2 hours so it can go to the track in a couple minutes notice. Plus the cost of a kit VS the cost of each part is a little better for me right now with shipping and all that stuff.

I still have the engine at the machine shop right now getting work done to it. I am in no hurry, plus my machine shop is pretty full with work so it might take a while. I want to go turbo in this car but with this engine I have at the shop it would be wiser to have it run flat tops. I am going to buy the parts individually so I know what I am getting. I would suggest these kits to someone who is looking for a quick replacement for there Z. http://nebraskaengine.safeshopper.com/268/cat268.htm?288 This place is the cheapest I have found for our cars with basic parts. I have called them and for them to find pistons and a cam was hard but they did get them for me if I wanted them. Prices may have jumped up a bit but should be reasonable.

I say call them due to the fact that the customer service is great and who knows what might happen if you get them off the net.
