Need 70 240Z Fuel Vapor Tank

I am in the process of having my interior redone. After taking off the rear right interior panel, I found that the fuel vapor tank didn't fit correctly . After further scrutiny, I found the tank is a replacement tank from a newer model Z. So, I need to find a good used plastic fuel vapor tank for my early model 70 Z. I have no junkyards to check here in Phoenix with Zs, so am trying to see if anyone has one lying around. Anyone have one out there they would sell?

Hi Duffman,

I have VIN 1222 and it had no provisions for the evaporation tank... I have often wondered at which point Datsun decided that gas fume recovery tanks were needed...Govt mandated I s'pose...

I hope one of the local Gurus will shed some light.

Thanks, David, I e-mailed you to check on your vapor tank. I also would be interested to know when Datsun first started using the vapor tanks. I know they started with plastic for the first 1 to 2 years then switched to metal. Anyone have any additional thoughts? Are they necessary?

Is it possable , that this car came from Canada? It's my understanding that the evap tank was not required for the non US market early on . Gary

Those of you that have/had the plastic one, did you replace it with a more modern metal one? I have a metal one that doesn't fit. How did you make yours fit?

I beat on the metal tank with a BFH until it no longer hit the quarter panel, you'll also need the interior panel for the metal tank, since the tank is larger the interior panel has a bigger bulge. Problem that I was having is cracking the plastic tanks. I have a hunch it was a result of autoxing, but I broke 3 of them (try to find 3 plastic tanks!!!) before I switched to the metal tank.

So, Jon, did you use a different interior panel to allow the metal tank to fit or did you use the BFH to "alter" the panel as well?

No, I got an interior panel off of a 72 I think. Hammers and plastic trim pieces don't mix...
