I need cam tower shims

Whats your guys thoughts on installing cam tower shims. My head has been shaved down too much and has changed the timing a bit. I measured my old head and it is 4 2/8" in. from bottom to top and the new one is 4 6/16", it is like 2 16ths off and still needs both sides of it shaved again, the cam tower side needs to be shaved because the middle tower is a little tiny bit higher than the others. I found one place that has them for 13.99 for a set of five that are .015 thick so I will need like four sets, but I was wondering if anyone knew where to get them for cheaper? Thanks

That seems to be the going price from what I've seen. Not only do they fix your timing, but they also pull the chain tighter. Loose chain is a bad thing, and the stock tensioner is not up to the job of tightening a chain when the head has been shaved a lot. The end result of shaving the head and not shimming the cam towers is that the chain will chew up the bottom of the slack side chain guide.

You know, if my head needed that many shims, I think I'd be looking for a replacement head. Round port heads (assuming that is what you are using) aren't all that expensive.

Wooow, its a good thing I found out before that kind of stuff happened. I knew my timing was off because it was running pretty bad, but I just couldnt figure it out til I bought one of those "how to rebuild nissan & datsun OHC engines" books by tom monroe. He goes into pretty good detail about it. I wish I would have had one of these books while I was doing the rebuild . This is the only place I could find them, http://www.goodson.com/ . Do you know if there is an auto parts store that sells them? Oh I forgot to mention type in datsun on the search bar on that page

It is a round port. They go for 600.00 brand new very hard to find N47. I bought this one from ebay from Urgelis. I dont know if you have read that post under one cam tower shimmed, but I was pissed about how I got the head. I paid 380.00 for it and had to put new rockers new lash pads and a new cam on it.

Now you (and all of us) know why Urgelis hides his feedback rating.

Might I suggest that you post the information on the head ( and ALL of the problems that you encountered) that he sold you in the original thread that you created so that others who come across that thread will be advised of the quality of merchandise sold that pinhead worm.

This situation should be a lesson to everyone about buying from someone who hides their feedback, or has $hitty feedback.

Hmm, I passed on an opportunity to buy something from Urgelis a while back, his answers to my questions about the product just didn't "feel" right to me. Add that feeling to the hidden feedback, and I went elsewhere. Sounds like it was the right decision.

I was just happy I found a head on ebay:mad: . But If anyone has a P-79 or a an N-47 head they want to sell that is in good shape no cracks or warped please let me know, the P-79 doesnt have the oil bar does it? I figure if I have to shave the head on both sides and get shims, oh and get new valve springs because the ones that are on there are too tall, and new lash pads to compensate for the shims, it would cost about 260.00 for everything :sick: :stupid:. It would just be a big ol mess. So please let me know if you have one preferably N-47.

He has good stuff like the fuel pump bloke off plates and small stuff like that, but just dont buy any engine parts from him!

I've got a P79 in my car now that will be surplus in a few months, but that doesn't do you any good right now.

How about getting one from someone like Danny's Datsuns or Bad Dog Parts? I'm going to be picking up a bunch of parts from Danny tomorrow, you want me to see what he has?

Hey thanks, and it is an N47 not N57LOL . Typing problems!. Yeah I've had one too many beers too.I'm just messin, but please let me know if they have one! And when are you wanting to sell your P79 head?
