I've recently had a problem with my car not starting. I mean nothing, like the battery is not even connected. I've checked the battery and it is fully charged however I tried to start it directly from the starter motor across a screw driver, nothing once aqain!?

I've heard that these cars have problems with regulators and these symptoms point to it.

Any comments? How does the regulator work and where is it? I've provided some pics below of where I think the problem might be!???????????

the regulator is the one on the black there.... they are external on the 74 260z..... just call warren see if he has a spare one lyin around i bought one from him for $15 bucks.,... you can't repair them....

not sure how much a newer one from a shop, or nissan would be...

Reg should not be your prob tho if you have a full charged batt. Look for a fuseable link some where close to the batt, prob in the POS side of the system.

If the starter did not turn when you jump accross the starter terminal, I would check for 12v at the starter terminal, then procede from there. Could be a fusible link. Question, does anything else work, ie lights, horn etc?

My Z did this once, I checked the starter and the links. Didnt find anything wrong. It had a old battery in it but she still started on a dime so i didnt think thats what the problem was. But sure enough i bought a new battery and wam! fired right off

I recently had a similar problem with my 73 240. When I turned the key to the start position I would hear a relay click on the passenger side firewall but nothing at the starter. I bridged a wire across the fusible link on the starter silinoid and it cranked fine.

The fusible link is a 3" black wire attached to the B terminal on the starter silinoid. It plugs into a connector attached to a white-red wire comming out of the wire harness.

I bridged around it just to test it, mine needed to be replaced. Bridging around it permanently would probably fry something more expensive.

this has happened to me on both Z's ive had... turned out to be the fuseable link

Thanks guys, I'll check up on this fusable link, sounds like it could be the culprit seeing my vltmeter shows 11.5 V across the batt and also across the starter. Funny thing is does't even come close to starting, the little handbrake light does'nt even light up and with 11.5V I expect I should at least see that little light work.

Got home just as it was getting dark and had a quick play around with what I think is the fusable link. Results are good seeing the car kicked over and started first turn of the key and kept starting reliably. I'll take a better look tmrw but just to be sure I've taken a photo of what I think is the fusable link.

Any comments guys? Is this the fusable link?

That's it. Sometimes the just contacts need cleaning but to be on the safe side, I'd replace it.

If the link is bad ( or burned) it will be brittle inside if you try to flex it. The green colored ones might turn to black ( burned outside).

Make sure the connectors are clean too. Use a little dielectric grease and make sure the cover fits well.

Just don't forget to find out why things weren't working! Even if it's just a loose connection. If the link was burned, you have a potentially serious problem and need to be diagnosed.

Don't forget to get yourself some spares for in the future. They seem to get brittle on their own.
