Lucas07 Posted March 24, 2006 Share #1 Posted March 24, 2006 I have a 1977 280Z and i was thinking about putting performance header and exhaust on it. I was going to get a Monza system for both of those items and i was wondering if anyone knows about Monza? Like how it sounds and performs. If not Monza should i get another brand? yukonharry Posted March 24, 2006 Share #2 Posted March 24, 2006 I've got the complete Monza system on my 77. Headers included. I absolutly love the sound. It's not too loud, kind of throughty, no crackle. It sounds like a healthy engine. Especially when my 4bbl opens up!. It's very livable and doesn't hurt your ears when you drive with the windows down. In fact, 2 other members in our club have bought, or are buying the same system after they heard mine. That's my take on it.

yukonharry Posted March 25, 2006 Share #4 Posted March 25, 2006 A club member friend just had a complete set put on his 77. He just went to the local muffler shop and had them do the work. However, it really run crappy. He took it back and they found a vacume leak. I know they had to put a new intake/exhaust gasket on it. He said it was too loud got him, so he had them replace the cat with a glass pak. It sounds pretty good.As for more preformance, I'd just go thru the engine and have it tuned to factory specs. That way you would make sure you are getting all the ponys it's susposed to put out. As far as mods, I went with a ZX dizzy and a blaster coil. That really woke my engine up. I guess the old system was a little tired.I have a 74 260 in mine. With the 390CFM Holley, the timing is set at 10*. It passed todays california smog sniffer. I get 24mpg no matter how I drive. I also run the cheap gas.
Hrududu Posted March 25, 2006 Share #5 Posted March 25, 2006 I don't know anything about Monza, but I replaced my exhaust with a 2.25" pipe and a Flowmaster Delta 40 series muffler, and it sounds GREAT! When I got the car, the Previous owner had choped off the last half of the stock exhaust and clamped on the piping and muffler off an old Honda. The pipe was about an inch around the the muffler was clogged. I took it to the muffler shop and had him change it all out. He cut out the pre-muffler too. It all cost about $170 including labor and all welded connections.
VaGuS510 Posted March 25, 2006 Share #6 Posted March 25, 2006 I am interested in the flowmaster 80-series mufflers. They are for Corvette and Camaro but i like the sound. It is quite but audible at idle and screams when you get on it. I have heard that the 40-series leads to some interior resonance. It is really one of the louder mufflers that flowmaster makes. Arne Posted March 25, 2006 Share #7 Posted March 25, 2006 My experiences with Monza are about 20 years old, and on water-cooled VWs. In that case, they fit acceptably well, looked nice, sounded good although a bit loud (I had an extra glass-pack welded in to quiet it), but didn't last long. In its defense, those old Sciroccos seemed to have something in their exhaust that rusted mufflers internally. In 15 years of Scirocco ownership, I never got more than 3 years out of an aftermarket muffler. When I get to that point, I'll take my 240Z to the local hot rodder's muffler shop, tell them what I'm after, and let them build it. You can still hear it, but not bad at all even with both windows down. I think it is the perfect balance.

Helldog Posted March 27, 2006 Share #10 Posted March 27, 2006 Get a Flowmaster exhaust. They sound beefy and give good power. Mine screams at high rpms and belows at low rpms. No ricer sound either. Also I've had mine for at least 3-4 years and I have no problems with it at all. I've seen a Z with Monza exhaust and I didn't think it sounded so nice. boostedz Posted March 27, 2006 Share #11 Posted March 27, 2006 I had the Monza exhaust ages ago and when it was installed it was nice. Once broken in though and thouroughly burned out a year later it sounded like an angry set of bees running down the road.
=Resurected280= Posted March 27, 2006 Share #12 Posted March 27, 2006 I'm gonna throw this out there because I dont think anyone else has this setup. What I have on my Z right now is a Full Boar universal muffler that my local exhaust shop carries (the rest of the exhaust is stock) and I really like it. It has a nice deep rumble at idle and is pretty deep and loud below about 2600rpm, or when you really get on it, and it screams at higher rpms (about 4000 and above) and never ever sounds ricey. The thing that I really like though is that its almost as quiet as stock from 2700-3900rpm which works out to be cruising speed for me on the highway. Also its cheaper than a flowmaster 40 series which ive been told has a similar design.Just tryin to give a different option :-).
