grinding in the driver side rear...theres a joke in there somewhere.

What you need to do is locate the souce of the sound. I'd get the back end up on stands (on the rear body subframe) so the wheels are off the ground.

Check the tyres for signs of rubbing on body parts

Then use a jack to lift the rear A link thing so the wheel is at normal ride height. start it up, put it in 1st and let it idle and see if you can locate the source of the sound. Just be carefull.

Could be some part rubbing on another, could be your diif has no oil in it.

could be a worn out uni joint.

If it's most obviously while on the brakes I'd say it's a wheel bearing but please try to be more specific. An inspection of Uni joints would be a good start. Often you will be able to see a reddish powder around them when they are stuffed and often you will be able to feel quite a bit of play in them.

How do your rear drums feel after a drive are they hot to touch? Could be drums gripping while driving.

to eliminate braking, when it IS making the sound, put the brakes on enough to see if the sound disappears the instant you press the brakes--if the sound disappears, then it has something to do with the driver's side drum brake.
