Posted March 28, 200619 yr comment_161425 I'm considering switching out my stock ignition system with and electronic system. What do I need to purchase for this conversion and what should I consider with this swap. My car is a 1973 240z. I have been told I could get a system out of a 280z and this would be a direct fit. Please advise of any pitfalls or performance advantages.Ken Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/19416-switching-to-electronic-ignition/ Share on other sites
March 28, 200619 yr comment_161429 There's been a lot of talk recently about this issue. Do a search and you should find threads on the 280z distributor and the zx distributor. March 28, 200619 yr comment_161430 i think there are a couple of options. One is to replace the points with an aftermarket kit such as manufactured by Pertronix. Another option is to use a later model z car ignition. The key words to search for that would be "E12-80". I'm a newbie to cars so i can't comment on the technical aspects, but searching for Pertronix and E12-80 ought to get you headed in the right direction. March 28, 200619 yr comment_161434 Either the Pertronix-type or the later 280ZX ignition will work fine. The Pertronix is retro-fitted into your existing 240Z distributor, so it will be fine as long as your distributor is in really good shape. If, like many, your 240Z distributor has worn shaft bushings, the results will be not as good.Of the later distributors, the 280ZX ignition is preferred mainly because it is simple and self-contained. It is very easy to wire. The best choice is from a '79 or '80 280ZX. The '81 through '83 distributors are the same as the '79-80, but the module is not - and the proper E12-80 modules are starting to become difficult to find in some areas. March 28, 200619 yr comment_161441 If you do the 280ZX distributor, you also need the coil, as the stock coil doesn't have enough power. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/19416-switching-to-electronic-ignition/#findComment-161441 Share on other sites
