Alan, I still confused. Are you saying there was[is] a JDM 280Z produced?

Japanese market S130-series models never got the 'X' suffix on their names. Here are the L28-engined models:

*HS130 = Fairlady 280Z-L

*HS130J = Fairlady 280Z-T

*HGS130 = Fairlady 280Z-L 2by2

*HGS130J = Fairlady 280Z-T 2by2

*KHS130JBC = Fairlady 280Z ( T-bar roof )

*KHGS130JBC = Fairlady 280Z 2by2 ( T-bar roof )

I'm not listing up the 2 litre engined versions ( there's hundreds of 'em ).

Curious that the "1" designation was added to the RHD version whilst it was purely HLS30 in the North American market. As Carl mentioned only Nissan would know for sure [unless you have any thing to add]!

You wouldn't have the model years for those models you listed by any chance, Alan?

What? The '1' was "added" to both RHD and LHD when the S130 model came out. All Alan is saying is that it was called the Fairlady 280Z in Japan, not 280ZX. Or am I getting confused now? LOL

Alan (or anyone else), do you know if the L28-equipped S30 was ever sold officially anywhere but in the USA? Also, I am assuming the S130 Fairlady 280Z was sold alongside the (lesser?) model Fairlady Z (with L20?)?

Hm, I believe Carl is talking about the S30 shape Datsun 280Z (like a 240Z with big bumpers), and Alan is talking about the S130 shape Nissan Fairlady 280Z (practically a 280ZX). The picture Alan posted is most definitely an S130!

It would be considered as a model run-on as the body is identical to the S-30, however fitted with a L28.

Not the next model that we know in OZ as the ZX.

That Carlos Casmiri S130 coupe may have been the NSW ex rally car for sale a while ago for $20,000, at the time I was looking for one. Not sure but it could have been badly smashed one time, which is why I hate rare old cars being used for dirt rallying. Anyway it was too expensive and potentially problematical for me.

On the US 280Z, a replica but in RHD form was built in Q for historic racing fairly recently. And I heard that a LHD 280Z was recently imported by someone on the Gold Coast.

S30 = 240z,260z,280z shape.

S130 = 280zx shape.

The S130 was called ZX in exports markets, but in Japan it was called the Fairlady 280z

So there are there are 2 different types of 280Z, and I believe some of the fairlady 280z's came to Australia (WA at least, as i've seen some, including a 2 seater) in the 80's as second hand imports, and were sold in used car dealerships along with cordias, rx-7's, my mums corona coupe, and the R30 skyline coupe she should have bought.

S30-series and S130-series are completely different generations. I won't bring the S31 into the equation for fear of confusing the issue even more!

Yes, always alongside eachother. Japan always got more model choice and options than any other territory. I'd be reticent about tarring all the L20-engined versions with the same brush ( "lesser?" - oh dear ) as the L20ET versions were arguably better than the n/a L28E versions......

No. Two different generations. I think that is the source of the confusion here.

No such creature available in the Japanese market. It didn't exist. Perhaps this was a Brigadoon that only appears on April 1st? :-)

That's it in a nutshell. The model names cause confusion, especially when the Japanese market is largely ignored and misunderstood.

This kind of confusion is rooted in the fact that we don't see the different generations of Z as small families of different models for different markets. If we look at one market ( and often one model ) and then decide that this particular model represents the whole range, we are bound to get confused eventually.

This reminds me of the comments of my neighbour. He saw me working on my project car in my garage ( its a 1970 Fairlady Z-L that I'm turning into a 432-R clone ) and he said "Wow - what's that, have you got another 240Z?". "No", I replied, "It's a Fairlady Z-L". "It looks just like a 240Z" he said. "Not quite the same thing - but they were pretty much the same shape" I explained.

He looked thoughful for a moment, and then said:

"So what you are saying is, its really a 240Z - yes?"
