Zak's Z Posted April 2, 2006 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2006 Hi guys:I searched high and low on how to actually get the ignition lock cylinder out of the ignition lock assembley. Mine can be turned with a paper clip its so worn, and I can get a new cylinder only and get a key cut for it. So I took the assembly off, and someone has already tampered somehow with it because those safety screws are missing. I cant get access to just the cylinder. It doesnt come out the back, and the front is capped with the bezel. The bezel looks like its stamped on there permanently. I dont know if you have to do something to the sides to get it out or force the front bezel off and I dont want to break it...looks fragile die cast. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks,Zak
Z Excellence Posted April 2, 2006 Share #2 Posted April 2, 2006 Take it to a good locksmith. I took mine and it was 25.00 to rekey a new clyinder to my old key and took about 20 minutes. No marks that you can see once it is reinstalled on the steering column.
Zak's Z Posted April 2, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted April 2, 2006 I have a locksmith that will key a new cylinder for me, I just wanted to get the old one out for him, then put it all back together myself after he gives me the new one with keys. Hes doing me a favor, probably only cost me a beer after work thats why I wanted to do all the ripping apart myself. He even had an old box full of different key blanks that matched up with ones Ive seen posted, but NO actual DATSUN/NISSAN keys.
EScanlon Posted April 3, 2006 Share #4 Posted April 3, 2006 If you already have the Steering Lock off of the Steering Column, then what will befuddle you and take you literally, hours, will be a simple operation for him as a locksmith. He's probably NOT expecting you to take the cylinder out of the lock housing.2¢E

Unkle Posted April 5, 2006 Share #6 Posted April 5, 2006 If you have your ignition assembly removed from the column, look at it around the cap area ( cap = the on/off/lock/access roundstainless part ). You will see 2 or three small roll pins . These have tobe removed correctly by drilling a small hole right next to them , and prythem up with a sharp scratch awl or such. Then the whole plug assemblywill pull out of the housing . Then, replace and reverse the disassembly.About 10 minutes for an experienced person or locksmith..... don't attemptif you haven't done this before , as you can butcher it easily. Let yourbuddy do it ! :classic:
yukonharry Posted April 5, 2006 Share #7 Posted April 5, 2006 To give even more validity to what Unkle is saying, check out this link http://web.newsguy.com/glamke/RekeyZlock.pdf I have it posted on our web site tech tips. I followed the directions to the letter and had no problem. Good luck. Just don't get frustrated and start ripping...
