daddz Posted April 6, 2006 Share #1 Posted April 6, 2006 Thanks to 'kats' for discovering another way to date code your S30. I thought this deserved a new thread. If your Z still has its original jack and tool kit you might be lucky enough to have a checklist enclosed by the factory which can aid in date coding your Z. The date will usually be stamped in black ink with a date in the Showa period format. In the case of my 240Z (08/70 HLS30-08323) the date was 45.8.15 or August 15,1970 which corresponds to the doorjamb tag of 08/70. Just as an experiment I checked another toolkit I had from a 1978 280Z. In that case the paper was much smaller and the date was 53.5.25 or May 25,1978. Attached is a photo of the inventory list:
sblake01 Posted April 6, 2006 Share #2 Posted April 6, 2006 Doesn't that really just date code the jack and tool kit? The car would have to have been built before the kit was put in.
kats Posted April 8, 2006 Share #3 Posted April 8, 2006 Thank you daddz, very good paper you have.We are tring to ident when our car was born. Many many discussions have been on this site,I love this topic. Now what I am thinking is,it is not easy to nail down the build date. We(or NISSAN) need to settle down "what date is suitable for the car as a build date".But it is difficult to difine the build date. However I can imagine when my car was born. This is very fun to do this.Nobody can say 100% for sure about this,so we can enjoy "imagine" the day when the car was born. And I think our imagination is not bad,it is getting closer to the Actual date when we find the date stamps on its car and gather the data as much as we can and compare friend's car.(I know I need to clear what is Actual date anyway)My 240Z got 11/69 for heater harness,12/69 for seat belts,01/70? for rear differential,01/70 for the spare tire wheel02/70 for engine room harness,02/70? for engine block we discussed before03/70 for rear view mirror mount basement03/70 for steering horn basement03/70 Door jam tagSo, I can say this "My 240Z CAN NOT be born BEFORE 03/70"This is only what I can say right now.The latest day which is found in the car become the key.My car could have been in assembling line until 03/70.And I think it is very possible my car has completed in 03/70.The factory does not seem to hold my car without reason, many U.S. people are waiting to recieve. We talked about accuracy of the door jam tag before,in my case I think I can use my door jam tag as a reference.I want to know,is there any car have 1969 door jam tag but it has 1970 stamps on its parts? In this case, the door jam tag is strange. These inside dash harness is unlike to replace. So they are very useable to imagine the biuld date.daddz, your tool kit paper is a very good reference.Because I think the tool kit is installed very final stage in the assembly line,is not it?It is not ahead of installing dash and other interior vinal trims I think. If you do not find the date later than 08/70,your car's door jam tag not only can be used as a good reference also prove door jam tag's accuracy for your car.The tool kit paper shows the tool kit was made day by day I mean it was not made far ahead of car's production schedule.I guess it is small parts but the factory did not made too much nor stock too much. kats
daddz Posted April 13, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted April 13, 2006 kats,I would have to agree with your assertion that the tool kits were assembled on a day-to-day basis. It would be interesting to find another date coded part that would have been placed in the car after the jack and toolkit.

Its very likely our Z's rolled across the production line about the same time, as my serial number is (2126)......30 cars difference! Tom
sakijo Posted April 14, 2006 Share #6 Posted April 14, 2006 Kats' post brings to mind the ongoing debate about children and abortion. When exactly is the car born? When the parts are made? When it starts down the assembly line? Or when it is completed at the end of the assembly line? Even at 03/70, there were 31 days in March. Which day? I don't think we will ever know exactly . . . . just approximately.
26th-Z Posted April 14, 2006 Share #7 Posted April 14, 2006 Your topic has been mulled around before, sakijo. HS30-H chimes in on that discussion. From what I have read and a couple of conversations with a couple of different people, I am led to believe that the records have been destroyed. I know the cars had what we would call a build sheet - I have seen one - but for the most part, any specific recording of the manufacturing date is unheard of.So we banter back and forth about different ideas. Is it at the time the build sheet was made, or is it when the car rolls out the assembly room door?
