Is a 200SX worth picking up?

I came across an early 1980's 200SX in a JY. I didn't see much of anything that would work on a Z. It did have a similar, if not the same, fuel injection system.

The one I saw had a 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission (L4N71B), but it had a different bell housing than a Z transmission. I thought about snatching the tranny as a backup since I'm putting a Maxima auto into my wife's 280Z.

A trans from a 80 200sx wouldn't work in a Z. The engines in those cars (Z20s) are slanted more than an regular L4 or L6. The bell housing is also slanted to compensate. It would bolt up but the shifter would come out at a funny angle.

I believe you can use the rear calipers for a rear disk brake conversion, and I think I remember reading somewhere that some of them had R200 LSDs in them. Maybe even a 4.11 but I'm not sure about either.

The early 80's model I saw did not have an independant rear suspension, hence no R200. I also thought it had rear drum brakes but I could be wrong.

That was the 1984-85 200SX turbo that had the 4.11 R200 open diff.

The non-turbo had a 4.11 R180.

The Z20/Z22 series engines are common in the trucks. Not all that great. The CA18de/and turbo and CA20De engines are pretty good little guys. I saw a CA18DE swap in a 510 recently. But I think those engines were 1984+

I think that the transmission will work on a Z-car. I know that in a Datusn 510 people commonly swap a dogleg 5-speed that i think comes from a 200sx. Give it a check, if reverse is where first normally is then you probably have a useable transmission. Only thing is that those transmissions can't take much power, probably 200-250hp. That is if you would really want a dogleg 5-speed, the mount would be in the wrong place also. Doglegs are normally desired for autocross because the 2-3 shift is striat up and down, making the most common shift happen quicker.

The 'dogleg' 5 speed, that is used as a common swap in the early PL510 (68-73), comes from the earlier 200sx (S10 77-79) or the 510 (A10 78-79) . They both have L engines. What I said above about the cars (S110 80-83) and 510 (A10 80-81) with NAPS engines applies to the five speed too. The trannys from the NAPS engine cars are slanted and won't work in a Z.
