280ZXT and Z31T CV half shafts in OZ

Hi Guys,

i am looking at trying to fit the modernmotorsports 280Z/CV joint adaptors into my 240K with R200..

I know very little about the Z's, but i apparently need a 27 spline 280Z hub and CV companion flange, along with either Z31 turbo (4 bolt flange) half shafts, or 280ZX Turbo half shafts.

i read somewhere that the 280ZXT wasn't sold in australia..

i was just wondering if i have any chance of getting these parts from australia? or do i need to try the US?

Here's his work taken with a phone cam so pics aren't that clear. These shafts are being turned by a 500hp engine with an auto trans, R200 and are holding very well after 70 odd launches with normal street tyres.

Not sure about the 240K stuff. As you know downunder we did not get the 280ZXT, however there are a few 280ZX (1982-1983) I have seen that were fitted with the tri-pod CV rear ends like the 280ZXT (these use the 6 bolts to hold the half-shaft to the comp flange). The 280z 27 spline stubs can be found on the later 260z (both 2 seater and 2+2). If you have a shop like Stuart Wilkins then I would talk to the guys there :) of the options. Other Nissans that I have seen that have the same rear end setup as the 280ZXT is the Nissan Laurel C31 (JDM import here in NZ) also have a look at the R30's with the IRS I believe some of these might have same setup as the Z31 Turbo (ie 4 bolt CV units = stronger I am lead to believe)

George, thanks for those photo's they are of great help. do you know what the half shafts are from? and what stub axles were used? going off the photo of the adaptor, it has 27 splines, 260z?

i had received a quote from Stewert for almost $2000 for the conversion, a little more than i wanted to pay, hopefully if i can get some of the bits beforehand, it will be a lot cheaper

Hello Khughes.

My first reply so here goes.

I like Nzeder am not sure about the 240k stuff either. I have done that same conversion with the Modern Motorsport bits in my 71z. First of for myself I had to decide which R200 I had to go with. I chose the one from the Later 300z Turbo 88 with the LSD. The reason I had to decide first is because I had too many choices at the local junkyard and like there are differences in the way CV shafts meet to the companion flanges of the stubs.

Modern Motorsports has different sets of adapters for the different places for the screw to bolt up to the Companion flanges. The one in the picture seems to be the one off the 300 also because it has the 4 even going to the stubs. Then Modern Motorsports welds up the adapter Plate to your 280z companion flange so that you can make it work (nice work by the way). I reversed the CV to shorten it the slightest to get the clearance needed for movement. Then everything was able to bolt on like it belonged there.

I have to admit, i have very little knowledge about these things, i am far from a mechanic, but i am trying to learn (and save money where i can) as i go!

I had a look into track widths, as i assume this would be a very good indicator of wether the CV shafts would fit without being cut, i got as follows:

C110 240K : 1340mm

260Z / 240Z: 1346mm

C210 Skyline: 1354mm

280ZX: 1390mm

DR30 skyline: 1395mm

84 Z31 T: 1430mm

so presumably the 260Z would be the closest for me (and they are of the same era, so hopefully the stub axles will slot in easily) or possibly the Z31 shafts with the needed shortening modification (as if to fit the 260Z).

I sent an email to Zspares here in australia, and from what i can gather;

- Australia only had Z31 non-turbos, but the CV half shafts had 4 bolts (so i need these)

- later 260Z's had 27 spline stub axles (but are they the stronger ones like the 280Z ones?)

they also told me that the (australian i assume) Z31 non turbo had a 4 bolt flange and the turbo had a 5 bolt flange.. is this completely wrong? it seems to be based on all the US info i have read (6 bolt flange for N/A, 4 bolt for Turbo)

Having purchased 2 sets of the Z31 Turbo half-shafts in NZ (again given NZ and OZ spec cars are most of the time the same) I can confirm they are 4 bolt with the non-turbo using the 6 bolt tri-pod half-shafts. I think what they are talking about is the fact that the turbo shafts use a 5 bearing CV joint (only 4 bolts hold it to the flange) the 6 bolt (2 x 3 sets) have a tri/three bearing CV setup. From the back ends I have looked at (including R30/R31, C31 = Laurel ie all early 80's) you can also find the 4 bolt/5 bearing CV shafts in the R30 turbos. Most of others have the tri-pod. So this matches the US info (in the Z31 space that is as they did not get the Skylines/Laurels/Lepards etc)

well i managed to get a set of z31 turbo shafts in melbourne very reasonable price and got adaptor plates as well just got to weld in flange for stub axle to adaptor and its bolt in cant believe how easy it was

where did you get the adaptor plates from? if it saves me shipping to/from the states it will make life a lot easier! (especially if Modern Motorsports keeps ignoring ALL my emails)

i managed to get a set of Z31 shafts (though they seemd to think they were non-turbo with 4 bolts) and late 260z stub axles and comp flanges
