Fuel Sender Unit

Is the tank on the post 9/74 260Z a different shape than the 240Z tank? That is the only reason that I can think of that would make the earlier sending unit not work.

It is just a potentiometer... not rocket science.

I doubt that the gage on the dash would know or care which sending unit was installed. But if the float arm is too long for the tank it would certainly cause a problem.

Im pretty sure the later Z fuel tanks, like mid 1975 onwards differ from the early tanks, this is only a theory mind you, but i came to this conclusion because the later zeds had the 2.8FI engine's in them, so maybe they have some internal swirl pot or something like that that alters the sender unit in some way?

But from 1970-75 i dont know if there was any difference, but it could be like Zedrally said, the tank got marginally bigger,

My tank was bone dry and I managed to squeeze in 50L on the dot, however, because of the way ive done my fuel system i had to cut into the top of the tank to mount the fuel pump cradle, so i would expect that from doing this i would have lost 5approx Litres, so if i go by the fact that I have the larger fuel tank that might lead me to the correct sender unit,

Think i will just see if i can fix it, if not, i will just try my luck with the $66 unit,

Other problem is, that my original sender unit has been bent to accomodate the in-tank swirl pot, so if i do need to buy a new one i will have to bend it again,

I believe there's a bloke in Brisbane who knows Zeds insid out and sideways. I'm told that he's been into racing Zeds since day dot. Apparently there's always Zeds in his shop.

I don't know his contact details but if you can get in touch with the Brisbane Z Car club they should be able to help. Otherwise, I'm sure we have one or two members from Brisbane on this site who might be able to help.

There is one member who, I'm certain, will help if he can. Alfadog (his names Lachlan). Lives on the Gold Coast I think.

Rick.

Im guessing you're talking about Alan Stean. His shop is still there, though he deals primarily in race/rally Silverstone tyres (Great tyres i hear). He still might be able to help you; Zcar Workshop 07 3808 2755, Kenway Drive Underwood.

Good luck

Call me stupid, but if you've altered the capacity of the tank, then no stock sensor is going to indicate the precise amount left/used regardless of it being a 240/260/ whatever S-30 model.

You would need to re-calibrate the sender unit to the tank capacity. How you go about doing this is beyond me, perhaps you may need to change the arm on the sender to a smaller one?

Just get your old sender unit and gauge out and send them to someone who repairs gauges. I worked for a company in Melbourne that could repair sender units and we always got the gauges at the same time, to calibrate the two.

Anyone who can repair gauges should be able to do it. From memory it was usually around the $50-$60 mark fro the repair, takes a couple of days.
