I am gutting the interior of my early '71 and find the transmission tunnel has a very small hole for the stick and no provision for a hold down ring for the inner shift boot. I have no idea whether or not the boot that was in there is even out of a Z, I suspect not. My question is: What does an early boot look like and how is it held down? Glue down or does it rim in the hole itself like a fire wall grommet?

Any help appreciated.

There is a boot and it does hold onto the rim of the hole like a grommet. Should be available thru a dealer, I think there's a guy who sells them on ebay pretty much constantly, or you could try Courtesy Nissan.

Got it a couple weeks ago for $14.95 + shipping from Black Dragon (the vendor formerly known as Victoria British).

As I was looking at the Black Dragon Catalog it shows another smaller inner boot. Does this fit over the shifter ball itself, directly on the transmission?

That's right. There's the one on the transmission, then the inner, then the faux leather one on the console.
