Cam Grinders

Ok with all the cam grinders out there, who do you choose?

Obviously I'd be inclinded to go with what Rebello Racing in the US use, however they are all custom ground cams. I don't suppose anyone knows what kind of cam's they use or who grinds them?

I've had a look around at various vendors and they all seem to have very similar profiles. I'm wondering if the cam grinders in the US are using the same spec cams as those in Japan such as Kameari and the like.

I myself have bought a schneider cam kit but want to get some opinions on the best cam grinders and the most successful high HP L-series engines and what they are all using?

It just seems to me that alot of these camshaft companies just follow a premade template and don't bother trying to come up with the best cam profiles on their own.

So what does everyone else think?:D

Actually there are cam companies in the US who will grind to your specifications. Most simply advertise grinds that are popular to a wide range of buyers.

I had a cam ground to my preferred 300/.500" many years ago.(A local shop in the Wash, DC area called RC Automotive) It ran absolutely fabulous.

A cam is only as good as it's installer.

There have been mixed opinions, on this site, about Schneider.

There is a company called Paeco Industires, who specs cams to matched compression ratios and include a power range (they do everything!) . I'm am considering using them or Isky the next time around.

Hi Gavin,

Have a chat to Crow Cams in Campbellfield. Looking at what your head/induction /exhaust combo is, and then considering what you would like to do with the final package, then deciding the appropriate grind...It really is a black art. I think as long as they ask you the right questions about want you have, what you want to achieve, you're on the right track.

Jim.

My cars' PO got the cam from Wade Camshafts in Oakleigh Vic.

http://www.wadecams.com

They list it as a Datto L 4cyl, but can be made to a L6. I got the 733a, but with your setup I'd say you may be after something a little meatier? It would be interesting to find out what some of the jap specs were originally. Wade list some "Works Rally" cams but I dunno what or where they got them from...

Good Luck, tell us what you go for?

Luke

Luke, do you know of any decent (reputable) places in Qld?

Well, I'm sure there are a few at least. But I really haven't looked nor enquired as I'm really happy with the cam I've got. Though I don't think it's the sort of thing you need to have local. Are you planning on an upgrade too?

[soz about the small hijack :P ]

I've got a mild cam in my L28 with an N42 head. I'm also running it with flat top pistons, compression in the low to mid tens. The cam came from a place in Brisbane called Tighe cams. It was in the car when I baught it about a year ago.

If you want to have a look at the specs, got to http://www.tighecams.com.au/ My cam profile number is 812C

I've had a lot of trouble getting the timing correct. Having very little mechanical experience doesn't help :stupid: but even my mechanic (who is very experienced) has had trouble getting the engine to run smoothly. He says there's a fine line between getting it to idle without stalling and making sure that it doesn't lean out in the mid range. We think this is partly because of the SU carbs (round tops) and the stock cam gear. He suggested getting a Vernier cam gear and a richer set of needles for the carbs.

All things considered, I still love the performance the the mild cam has to offer and think that the lumpy idle sounds great :)

Is it relatively streetable? how far have you gone with head work?

Stage 1 port and polish, ie full polish and work the bowls, Port matched, Triple 40DCOE, Header, Nismo valves. The head is an Early E-88 (1971), and I am also using an MSD ignition. Timing is static 20deg BTDC @ 1000rpm, all in 32deg BTDC by 3000rpm. The engine is very lively and very streetable. The cam is essentially hi stage III (490/290), but he asked If I could take a higher lift, so voila 500/290.
