My New Project...

Hello everyone, just figured I'd introduce myself and will probably be poking around here quite a bit soon. I have my story thus far and some pics below:

My Story:

I've always been a Z fan, but was never able to own one until recently I decided I would try to find an old 240z to work on and restore. So after looking around for a bit, I found a guy who was clearing out his autobody/salvage place and had tons of Z stuff. I didn't really want tons of parts sitting around, but It was kind of an all or nothing package deal. So I ended up with two 240's, a 71 and 72, and a ton of parts like 3 interiors, a couple hatches, couple windshields, 3 dashes, a 73 motor, a 4 speed and 5 speed tranny, 2 extra pair of doors, a bunch of sheet metal, tons of carb parts, and lots I'm not even aware of yet since both cars are filled to the roof with parts. The 71, yellow one, is actually in fairly decent shape. Looks rough, but very little rust in the front end including the battery tray area. The tailgate has almost no rust. What I could see of the frame rails seemed good, but until I take a really good look it will be hard to tell. The worst is the floorboards, which aren't terrible, but do have rust, and the rear quarters which have about the worst hack-job fender weld in job I've ever seen. I'm hoping I might be able to use what he's got and re-do it properly. I hope to head up soon and see if I can get the 71 running and on the road this summer. Hasn't run for a year, but hoping it starts relatively easy. I'm looking forward to working on these and contributing the best I can around here.

What's the VIN and build date on the yellow car? It's a series I car so it should be Jan 1971 or earlier.

Sure wish I had the hatch off the yellow one for my yellow '71. Anyway - Welcome! Where abouts in the US do you live?

I'd have to look at the title for the VIN, and get to where they are stored to see the build date. Is the build date on the tag in the engine bay?

Yeah, it's in great condition too. I have a total of 4 hatches from the guy, but the yellow one seems to be in the best condition, virtually no rust. Possibly a tiny bit by bottom. I'd like to restore that one to the original color too.

oh, and I live in Wisconsin. It's not easy to find cars around here that aren't rusted to nothing and 30+ years old.

The VIN is in four places: the tag visible through the windshield, on the driver side door jamb tag, on the right side engine bay inner fender tag, and stamped onto the firewall. These should all match. The build date is only on the door jamb tag. The engine bay plate also lists the engine serial number which will allow you to determine if the car still has the original engine.

Supposedly it's all original (except front sheet metal obviously). Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check that everything matches next time I'm Up. Hope to get the 71 going within a few weeks here.

Welcome and my Z uses a wood stick to hold the hatch up too. Hold onto those spare parts.

I'm looking at a pathfinder tonight or tomorrow to haul all these parts now. Found a 91, that's in pretty decent shape for cheap.
