How is The Project going?

Not much lately on who is doing what project wise, what progress is being made and how much bad language is being used in the process:classic: So, take a minute and tell us all about whats going on.

My 280ZX coupe project is coming along nicely, bit more rust than I would have liked but its straight and thats the crucial thing. ZX body is much more complex than the S30, double panels, lots of boxed sections...

Anyway, partly bolted in the rear S14 subframe assembly today, put a ex S15 17x8" wheel and tyre on to see how it fits. Beauty! Almost flush with the outside of the guard, will have to roll the lips but other than that it will take a 9.5" wide wheel at the rear without mods, its going to look good, very good:D

My restoration is in it's 4th year now....... 240Z Build #418

Heres whats been done:

Body:

- Had to replace the roof skin, previous owner put a sunroof in it and it looked crap!

- Replaced 1/4 panel wheel arches due to rust.

- Fabricated a new battery compartment.

- Replaced the spare wheel well.

- Repaired rusted chasis rails.

- Tried to make a door skin; all went well until the last 2 inches of welded and the skin bowed.... had to wait 6 months before I could find another set of doors!

- Finally got the car sprayed (Black-Cherry Mica) and ended up with a few runs in the clear. Have decided to block the car back and flow coat it..... still waiting for the respray!

Suspension:

- Shortened struts approx 2" and used KYB shockers.

Brakes:

Front: 4 spot toyota 4 runner calipers; Peugot 504 vented/slotted rotors

Rear: R31 solid discs, R31 calipers (Handbrake works!)

260z Master Cylinder.

Engine:

L28 F54 block, Flat top pistons, N42 head, turbo 280ZX injection manifold, Megasquirt II ECU.

In the process of turbo charging:

- Fabricating a turbo exhaust manifold.

- Reconditioning P90 head.

- T03/T04 hi flow turbo

- 42mm Garrett external wastegate

Interior:

- Custom door trims

- Custom roof lining

- Reskinned Dash

- New carpet/vinyl

- Racing seats

I think that covers it :)

Mr Camouflage,

Be very careful when attempting to repair rust on the Z doors..... the metal is very thin and there isn't much support behind the door skin. I learnt the hard way; after trying to rust repair small area's in the bottom section of the door, the door warped from the heat.....

This was my fault as I didn't use a wet rag to keep the metal cool.... the reason I didn't use the wet rag is because I'm paranoid about putting water on bare metal..... I have overcome my fear as there are a number of good rust prevention products on the market :)

I found that I had to have the MIG set to the lowest setting and I could only tac weld the replacement section; trying to seam weld would generate too much heat and would either warp the metal or burn holes......

You'll also have to be careful when you're grinding the repaired area(s); a little bit at a time with time to let the metal cool down.

Well paint is finnished!!! Still gotta find a LHS doorjamb as mine rusted out. Then gotta get that welded in. All lights/bumpers and trims are back on. Sanding this w/e(fine wet/fry). Then glass put back in early next week.

Should be back on the roads very soon!!!

Paint been done for almost 2 years. Still assembling stuff!. I'm getting annoyed but I don't want to be a quitter. Just bought yet another car in the meanwhile to keep me from going insane (It's been 5+ years).

Thought about parting out the Z and cutting my losses so many times.

Just 30 days till Hurricane season starts again and no garage.

Wish I knew more Z people around Miami to keep me motivated.

Working on the annoying brakes and clutch hydrolics this weekend to see if I can get it to the muffler shop to finish off the exhaust.

I finally got mine almost finished ... just need to finish buffing and polishing the paint, fix the brakes (went for a test ride and found a hole in the brake line!!! I nearly $^!# myself when that happened), and still have some tune up stuff to do. After that it's stereo install time and then finishing off the small stuff (that takes about a few years I suspect :P )

Well its been 6 months so far for what was supposed to just be a tune a roll-cage and some minor rust repairs after an incedent at the track....

Done:

6 point Welded Roll Cage with intrusion bars

Rust repair in front rails (complete new rails)

Fixed minor and surface rust on most of car

repainted engine bay and front fenders

Powder coated window surrounds, door locks and handle, everything that was silver

Central locking and immobiliser

Valve grind

new cam (milder but faster with the revs we run (6500 as opposed to 7500 that the old cam was designed for))

new valve springs

Removed tar from interior and painted all exposed surfaces under carpets body colour

New trimming on strut towers, seats, all carpets and even a matching gear boot

260z close ratio 5 speed

R31 solid rear discs and calipers

HUGE Holden 4 spot calipers and vented front discs

Going for a tune when it is running again

..... it goes on but thats the bulk

Its been a long time with a lot of hours spent just generally cleaning up the car but the motor is now back in, the trim has arrived and it should be back together in about a week with any luck. (Fingers Crossed!!!!)

Her Majesty the 26th completed her body spa and dip in Wauchula last summer. All her welding work is complete and she is currently dressed in primer. The floor tar insulation undergarments have been fit and her final dress is having the seams sealed - complete - every body seam throughout the body! What a lot of work! Her engine is fairly complete - a standard rebuild but I had it balanced. I'm looking for an exhaust manifold p/n 14004-E3000. The suspension is all apart and ready to be painted.
