Cage.

I want to put a full rollcage in my 280Z. where should i get one? i found a guy that will build me one and ship it to me then i weld it which isnt a problem, for 360. that is a 6 point with 3 door bars on each side, dash bar, and harness bar. im taking my dash out when i do it and im making an aluminum one. what do i do about window roller uppers? they will hit wont they?

360 is good price, do you get the cup holder included ? I take it this is not a street car, so why worry about windows. If your racing it, then your looking at plexiglass for everything but the windshield, maybe that too. You could do a slider on the driver side.

It actually is a street car. I do want windows but was thinking about plexi glass. I plan to race it this summer. I have no need for comfort in the car so that is why i want a full out cage. My dad said i have to have some kind of cage to race or he wont let me so i figure ill go all out.

installing a roll cage in a street car can be more dangerous than leaving the car stock. I know that sounds backwards but having steel tubes around you without a helmet on a street car is very dangerous if you are in an accident, and well, driving a caged car on the street with a helmet is not practical...

I would look to a roll bar, and better seat along with 5 point seatbelts. this is a good compromise and should allow you to race under most situations.

I have herd that but i also plan on putting pretty thick padding around it. I had a toyota 4x4 truck that i had a full cage in and i had good padding on it but hit my head on it a few times four wheeling and i weas just fine. thye were really hard hits, from slamming into trees and what not (also had an exo-cage). Thanks for the advice but i am aware of that.

$360 for the cage tubing, bent and notched, is pretty cheap. Make sure its DOM tubing (ERW is no longer allowed anywhere) and in the proper wall thickness for the the racing sanctioning body you plan to run with. For road racing (SCCA, NASA) the wall thickness should be .120". For NHRA it should be .134".

i just had a 6-point cage with intrusion bars installed into my 260 (see pics in my photobucket album. link at bottom) and that was $2000 AU CASH installed which was the cheapest we could get anywhere. like john coffey said make sure that it complies to the racing sanctioning body.

I'll churp in here also....its been a while.

I have thought about installing a roll over bar in my zed as I want to have a bit of safety on the occasional local track days. I'm not racing against anyone, just trial speed events against the clock.

I contacted the track administrators and asked them what I need to do. They were very helpful and pointed me in the right direction with regard to local cage fabricators. They guys they recommended are also car club members that race, so they know what I need and are not in the business of ripping people off. So a very nice experience all round really.

So, don't rush into getting a cage made to only find out that it doesn't meet the local track rules. You'll have to rip it out and start again. Contact your local track admin and ask them. They will more then likely be very helpful as they want more members joining in and having SAFE fun.
