May 12, 200618 yr Author comment_167345 Thanks alot. What a great site, so much knowledge. In reply to zedrally: I am not particularly serious about doing well for a few years, but i want to build the car right the first time so I can keep stepping up, and not incur the warath of the scruiteneers, and be well within the spirit of the catogory, which I think will grow to be something momentous in this country. So, I have to find a Roadster gearbox, steel syncro, and rebuild her. No worries. I have heard it is a sweet box when done up properly. No, not considering PRC at this stage. Step it up from the borttom, less HP, less cost to build, and I already have most of the gear I need for HRC. A competitive PRC 1600 is a little out of my budget at this stage. Plus my driving needs a lot of developmment first. Ok down to business: WHO HAS A FS5C17A THEY CAN SELL ME???!!! May 12, 200618 yr comment_167352 As I stated earlier, I have the one from my Skyline sitting here in my garage. It's the exact same as the Z car. It works perfectly and did not grind in any gear before I pulled the drivetrain out. I am in Phoenix and shipping is pretty cheap and easy. May 13, 200618 yr comment_167358 Websteg, it's not the scuts you need to worry about, it's the other entrants who may protest. It's highly unlikely that one would (not at least at club or state level), you don't indicate where in OZ your in, if your in Vic I can put you in touch with many other HRC1 510 owners who can offer advice..If I can offer some advice, I think you are being initially over cautious. It won't be the first & last box that you will use, so why not just start out with a easily obtained zed box and work on getting the homolgated special as time goes by and you obtain more experiance.Good luck, PM me if you would like contact info.MOM Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20014-early-datsun-5-speeds-need-z-gbox-guru/?&page=2#findComment-167358 Share on other sites
May 13, 200618 yr comment_167362 I'd like to offer a pat on the back to Alan (HS30-H) and Brian (akwikz) for their respective offers to websteg. The great thing is the nature of the gestures is not uncommon across this forum and will only ensure it remains one of the healthiest and productive sites for newcomers and the more experienced skinned knuckle types alike. Goodonya fellas! Jim. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20014-early-datsun-5-speeds-need-z-gbox-guru/?&page=2#findComment-167362 Share on other sites
May 13, 200618 yr comment_167378 Now if only there was someone with a spare in Australia! I've got a FS5W71B I can offer but depending on whereabouts you are in Aus that might not be economical to post either. May 15, 200618 yr Author comment_167519 Finally, can someone definetly confirm that the FS5C71A in the Datsun 2000 sports is the same as the FS5C71A in the 240Z exported to Australia? Surely they are? Different bellhousing but same box? According to a gear chart I found they are. If they are the same, may make it easier to find one as quite a few Zs in AUS but not many 2000 sports. Also, have heard on another thread (referenced earlier in this thread) that were a a close and ultra close ratio sets available. Can someone confirm? Thirsty for more knowledge now! May 15, 200618 yr Author comment_167521 thanks zed. I am in nsw, but very close to VIC, so would be operating in VIC. The more contacts I have re HRC, the better. So I will PM you. Re your advice........again, you are spot on. Clearly I am getting carried away, but I wanted to get right to the bottom of the issue. I have several 5 spds sitting around ready to go, but really wanted to unearth all the info. Re: g72s20 Spot on, amazing what some people know and are willing to share. It would take me 10 years to get all the info if not for persons like these. June 6, 200618 yr comment_170175 websteg,I've sent photos, dimensions and weight of the transmission to you - but have heard nothing back from you for a couple of weeks now.I presume you are not interested anymore then? June 6, 200618 yr comment_170182 I have a 1983 280zx gear box in my 71 240Z. The only necessary modificationwas for the shifter. I had to elongate the hole in the floor for the shifter. The speedo pinion has to be changed over to the original housing. The 1983 5spdis the best bet because the mainshaft nut has left hand threads and won't back off causing the trans to jump out of gear. You shouldn't have any problem installing it into a 510. June 9, 200618 yr comment_170453 FYI, Not all 2L Roadster 5 speeds have servo synchro's. In fact, most have the warner synchro's. There is no reliable way to tell by looking at the trans. You have to open it up. If you know what the toothed edge of the brass synchro ring looks like, you can sort of see it through the oil fill hole.If it's in a car, you can tell the difference by the way it shifts. the warner synchros feel more normal, like detent balls alone. The servo rings feel more damped like pushing the gear lever past the detent balls and then through some other resistance before the gear engages - if that makes any sense. To further complicate things, all of the roadster 5 spds have servo synchros on 5th gear - so you can't just take the tailshaft housing off.If you're looking or roadster info, start at 311s.org. There is a for sale forum there as well as a list of vendors.
