Glove box

Please excuse my ignorance, but is this piece of cardboard origami with staples in it my glove box? It's brand new in a Nissan bag...

If so, does anyone make something a little nicer?

If not, I'm thinking I might have it dipped in black acrylic. But, will it deform when it gets wet? Can I shellac it or something? Seems like the acrylic would work...

You got it in one. That IS the original glove box. If it is in the original packing it is probably worth buck$ to someone restoring a car. Don't know about putting a coating on it. What for? Mine is original and shows no wear, but then how would it wear out? I liked the vision of origami and staples...it is a Japanese car...

That's one smart feller who made his own out of sheet metal.

I'm the one restoring a car so I guess it should be "worth buck$" to me, but MSA sells them for $32. Not sure if theirs are "genuine."

Just checked the label on the bag to see if it really went with the glove box... and this is classic. It says, "A GROVE BOX" - I guess it's the real thing.

Anyway, I'm sure it'll hold up fine as long as I don't put anything heavier than the registration, insurance card, and one map in there.

I guess I can just see what happens with this one, and if it falls apart I can get the one from MSA and coat it or make my own out of an old washing machine. The cardboard just seems a little inadequate.

I "borrowed" the plastic one from my 260z parts car. I test fitted it and she fits in perfect.

I brought my replacement glove box from MSA, and it holds up fine, I keep a flashlight, my paperwork, and other crap in it... no problems...

The only problem I seem to recall is that it wasn't easy nstalling the new replacement glovebox without removing the dash......

Since I didn't have my dash out, and I wasn't about to remove it just to replace the glovebox, I removed most of the staples, so it could be installed, and than I hot glued all of the joints back together.

It wasn't easy, but it was easier than taking the dash out.

Don't forget to keep an extra fuel filter in there for at least a few months!!!

One note , If you ever want to replace the light bulbs in the gages , the glove box access is the access , unless you remove the dash . If you are concerned about the durability . Spray clear over the outside , this will seal it and stiffen it some . If you are not concerned with OEM look shoot the inside as well . My glove box has survived 33 years , so your new one should likely out last your Z .
