Posted May 12, 200618 yr comment_167282 Need to get my MPH corrected. Can you swap the gear assemblies between the 77 and 83 5spd trannys or do you have to change just the gear part.Saw somewhere that they might have a different offset! May 12, 200618 yr comment_167286 You change just the gear, the carriers are different. The gears work in all year cars and are changed by pushing out the small roll pin in the carrier. July 9, 200618 yr Author comment_173953 ok same subject different setup!putting what I think is a 83 5sp in the sons 73 240 which has/had a 4sp! why you may ask?? Just because!!! Putting in a rebuilt 280 motor anyway so why not!Anyway! Is the speedo gear in the tranny the only thing that controls the correct speed rating on the speedometer!Noticed that his 4 speed and this 5 spd both have WHITE gear, but the are WAY different on Tooth size/spacing! and didnt want to go in freely, both bodies looked identical.Think I read somewhere there is 3 different gears for the speedo to correct the reading! If so what would the other 2 colors be and does anyone have them laying around for sale, also if white is in it and it reads fast whick one to go with, and visa versa if it reads slow which one to goe with!I know that the gear in this 5sp has been changed because I put it in my other spd to correct its low(15mph off) reading! July 9, 200618 yr comment_173971 The correct original gear should have been yellow. Not completely sure, but am thinking 17 teeth. The gear will correspond with the rear differential, but your issue will be that the gearing on the '83 5 spd is completely different. I think that the rear end is a 3.9:1 in the '83 vs. a 3.36:1 from the '73. I think you'll find the gearing way too tall unless you swap the R200 with the tranny. Then you just leave the pinion gear alone in the 5 spd. All you'll need for the R200 swap is a mustache bar from a '77-78 280Z. They aren't very ard to find. I got one for $20. Took 5 minutes to pull.Yes, the pinion gear is the only thing that controls the speedo rating.I think there are 5 different pinion gear colors. Yellow and black from the 240Zs. Do a search to find the others. I have the same tranny sitting in the garage. If I find time, I'll look to see what color the gear is. July 9, 200618 yr Author comment_173973 Might be a good thing for the gearing to be to tall, HE IS 16!!!! And if it poses to many probs we can always put his 4sp back in!
