Throttle Linkage

You guys are too much!

Mountain Gote, is your linkage like mine, where you can push on the accelerator pedal about 25% down, then feel a bind, and if you push harder, all the sudden it frees up and you get an explosive acceleration? (scares the wizz out of my wife every time!!)

I still haven't found a way to smooth that out without changing parts that connects to the firewall.

pull all the connections apart and lub them. Those nylon balls need lubing, especially if you clean the engine compartment with degreeser/whatever.

Check under the dash for connections as well. Move each piece separately when disconnected checking for friction. The device on the firewall, that is a large pin with a spindle on it that turns needs to come apart and be lubed.

I tried silicon lube, everywhere, but the bind is still there. The rod that that sits in the "grommet" (for lack of a better word) at the firewall is about 1/8 inch loose. I am brainstorming a way to force a skate wheel bearing, or something to decrease the play/friction.

Cables are smooth and easy to adapt.

Also, Mat your early 71 has a link between the firewall and the carbs that is slightly shorter than the later cars. The later cars were changed because the shorter link caused the throttle to be really twitchy. I think you had a couple boxes of linkage, you might want to dig through and see if you can't find one that is longer. I think the link changed to one that was about 1" longer, but it's been a LONG time since I swapped mine out on my car when I ran SU's, so maybe someone else can help you out there.

I rebuilt the SU carbs. and hooked up the linkage to what I thought they went back on, so did everybody that helped me, mainly my older brother. but the gas pedal goes about 25% down smooth, but when it gets there it is hard to push, like Mat M said. That is why I am Writing to you great people. Just another Z owner trying to FIX my 72' 240Z.

Matt the rod you are referring to is adjustable , normally the adjustment end is in the engine bay . There is a 3mm lock nut and then you can adjust it. Maybe this will help you . Also the part that fits on the spindle can be installed wrong also . It will fit two different ways . Have a look at this also. Just a thought. Gary:rambo:

OK , try and disconnect the linkage that connects to the carbs from the ballance tube and check for binding If it is gone you will know where to look . Work back to the fire wall doing the same thing . you will find the problem .
