Bondomobile

:dead: :dead: :dead: When I first bought the car the guy said is friend hit a bridge, " I fixed all the damage" he said. I start sanding one day thinking it's a normal day then BONDO. I have a eighth of a inch of bondo from my door all the way to my rear hatch, my ridge on my wheel well is flat from the impact. Any of you guys had a surprise like this? And to top it off with suprise my shock covers are original still has Nissan and Japan a couple other things.

I had a similar experince ... I was stripping down the paint off my car with aircraft paint remover and then my rear drivers side all of a sudden wasn't separating like the rest of the car and instead was bubbling. There was a lot of Bondo. When I asked my uncle (who had owned the car for the last 29 years) he had to think for a second and remebered when he had a fender bender some years ago (like the first year he had the car) when some guy hit him at an intersection. It was a suprise, but just added to the bondo work I needed to do.

When i was pulling my car apart i discovered it had been hit eather real hard in the left side or left front corner. It has a big dent in the frame rail, warping the front section so that all the front end the hood and fenders didnt sit right on it.

The left seat was sitting funny, i thought it was due to the rusted out floor bourds, but the frame rail at the bottom of the door was pushed in 2 1/2 inches towards the tranny hump. This is a Big surpise becouse the car tracked well.

I guess im in the marked for a good 240z shell to put my l28 in...

These cars are always full of surprises. The age and the fact they are sports cars has something to do with it. Just because it has bondo in it does not mean it has been hit. My passenger door is straight and has bondo from the factory. As did the top. Skim coat they call it. Now the aft valance and hood are a different story yes they were hit. Looked good until I got into the restore process.

When I started stripping my Z I found out that the hood had been replaced. I was sanding and I hit green. I thought What the hell is this? Bondo is pink! Turned out that the hood of my Z came from a hideous green Z. Fortunately, everything else matched with the original VIN.

The roof on my Z was VERY warped and had enough waves in it to make a surfer be envious. I ended up going the 'skim coat' method on the top to make it smooth. Much cheaper than going the route of paying to have the roof cut off and replaced.

Even modern body parts that come brand new to the body shop have 'skim coats' on them to get them to be perfectly shaped right. It's the problem with sheet metal or even plastics, the temperture changes and so does it's shape.

I' probably gonna do blue as well. Going to see the paint guy next week. Thinking about a deep metallic speed blue with two white Daytona stipes down the hood and hatch.

I had a '71 240 back when I was 17 that I did exactly that with - a deep metallic blue, with two white stripes, starting at the tip of the hood "bulge", over the top of the car and down the hatch. I had the stripes follow the contour of the hood bulge so that they each came to a point right at the tip of the bulge. I've seen similar schemes where the stripes were just straight all the way to the front of the hood, and I don't like it half as much.

Wonder whatever happened to that car...I sold it in 1981 as one of the frame rails started rusting off the floor board...

My 72 was easy to remember: HLS30097001. I sold it to a lady who gave it to her son and is now owned by a member of the Zclub of houston.

He put on a new roof skin to replace the sunroof it had when I bought it, did the interior in leather and it continues to win awards at the International Car Show held here every fall. So I get to see my old baby once a year.
