I am an 1st gen RX-7 owner.... i now want to add a 70 240z....

Hello everyone! My name is Marcello and like i stated in the subject i am a 1982 Mazda RX-7 Owner. I love my 1st gen Rotary and i always will be a rotorhead for life. But I now want to have another car to go with my 80's japan import hobby! I LOVE 240z's. They are EXTREMELY sexy cars but i will be honest with you...i don't know anything about these cars and there quirks. This is why i joined this forum. I will be searchijng like crazy on here to grab alot of info on these cars before i take the pluge to buy one. Well like i said i was just introducing my self and my love for 80's sports cars. oh let me post pics of my 1982 Mazda RX-7......tell me what you guys think of her......laters everyone.......

That is a nice RX-7! I looked into getting a Mazda for restoration a bit before buying my 280Z but was discouraged by others statements on the rotary engine. Sounds like your very happy with your car. You can see where the Mazda designers were trying to capture some of the Z car popularity in the RZ-7 design. You may want to consider getting a bit newer model 280Z. It seems good 280's are getting harder to find. The larger engine, EFI and available 5-speed makes the 280Z a lot of fun to drive!

Looks nice and White . LOL Just kidding , good looking car . I have always liked the RXs looks. Just not a fan of the Wankel engine. You will find the 240 Z to be a completely different breed of Cat . Good look in your Quest. and welcome to the classic Z web site . LOL You will find a wealth of knowledge on Z cars here . Gary

Love the 1st gen RX7. I even looked into Pro7 racing a bit. Nice cars, and reliability isn't as much of an issue as with the later turbo'd rotaries.

As far as the Z, main thing to be aware of is rust when you're buying one. If you can turn a wrench you can fix or replace any mechanical part on a Z, but fixing a body that looks like swiss cheese is a bigger job. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find threads on where to look for rust when purchasing a Z.

Also, the 240 is the lightest at about 2350 lbs. The 73 gained a few lbs, and in 74 the 260 came about. Mid 74 the 260 got the new heavier shell that was kept all the way through the 280Z, and those were about 2850 lbs. That extra 500 lbs makes a big difference in how the car drives. On a more happy note the 280 engine transplants right into the 240 chassis which gives a nice bump in displacement and power. The 79 280ZX starts a completely different chassis and only the powertrain is shared with the earlier cars.

The great thing about S30s is that they don't have quite as many "quirks" as SA22s!! My friend had a series 1 RX7 with some mild upgrades and it was fantastic. We got to compare them quite a bit as at the time I had a 240Z. I still prefer the 240Z, but the RX7 is great too - it was often called "the 240Z of the 80s" because by then, the Z car had gone seriously bad with the 280ZX.

I disagree with beandip here. Sure they have different kinds of engines, but they are very, very similar. Actually 10 years of technology didn't really show much to me. The 240Z looks much more "classic" though. Feels more "oldschool" too. But I think they are very similar.

Best way to see what you think of them though is to go and drive one!! Let us know if you have any more questions though, these guys here will be able to answe/solve just about anything you throw at them.
