Elec. dizzy

I believe it was jmortensen who brought up the idea of using the ZX dizzy w/o the module. He stated that the MSD6x has this function built in, and I would have to say he is probably right since the MSD is in essence an electronic ignition in and of itself. If I had the original connector that plugs into the MSD unit for the violet/green trigger wires I might even try it myself, but since I don't there is no way I can, at least not easily. If and when my module ever dies, I'll try this.

Richard, assuming the dizzy you bought is in serviceable condition, it will work with the MSD. Once you find out what kind it is and obtain any missing/incorrect parts like the fixing plate or the lower mount, give it a go. No need to spend the additional money if you don't have to.

I have a Z car microfiche CD coming. If nobody chimes in with the correct model based on the part# you provided in a week or so, I'll get it for you.

I don't know if you cobel the things together , but I do know the module is the trigger for the ZX ignition and you do NOT need the resister. The proper coil will have that taken care of . When you mix and match you are on your own . There are members that may know .

I have an E12-80 dist. out of a 79 ZX. Now that I have the Mallory Unilite, I no longer need the ZX dist.

It's in excellent condition and fresh out of my Z. I'll sell it to you for $80 and I'll pay the shipping. P.M. me if your interested.

P.S. I used it with the MSD 6A and MSD Tach Adaptor so it should work perfect for your application. I even have the OEM plug from the donor car so it's a much cleaner instal.

When I found out that you could do this I did it immediately, because it is just removing another potential failure point from the system. The ZX module isn't particularly notorious like a Ford module IMO, but they do go bad occasionally, so why not just remove it from the system? You can just make jumpers to go from the red and green wires in the distributor back to the connector on the MSD. Mine had a 3" pigtail on the MSD IIRC, and I just cut the connector off and soldered on my own spade connectors.

Haven't we had this discussion already? What is so ZX specific about the module? If I ran a Chrysler van with a ZX module, would the van get pissed off, or would the sparks it makes be less sparky? Would the Chrysler spark plugs gag on Datsun sparks? As long as the module works, it works. Which is why much to the dismay of some people HEI modules have been used in Z's for years. Get over it. It isn't "cobbling something together" in the sense that you're using sub-par pieces. It's a module, not a bottle of wine. ROFL

I guess it's all in how you want to do it. Some people prefer to have the Datsun/Nissan specific parts that were designed for the car with out worry of how much it costs.

Some others may like the fact that the ZX dist. and Module bolt right up to each other. I personally have not seen the GM parts used in a Datsun but I'm sure that they work just fine and don't cost as much. Every parts store sells Ford and GM parts, but not all of them have Datsun parts. But does it bolt up using stock screws and such or is there modifications to be made? I don't know.

I myself would rather have parts that were made for use with each other and bolt holes that line up. etc, etc. But I know that I don't speak for every one and I guess it's all in "personal preference"

I hear that, and I can understand why people would feel that way. Beandip still seems to think that there is something hokey or half-assed about using a different module, and that simply is not the case.

Unfortunately the piece I am missing is the female connector that plugs into the side of the MSD unit which has the violet/green wires. I'm sure MSD could probably provide it. I will probably do this at some point.

Well I might just try hooking up the zx dizzy (when I get one) to the msd unit directly. So you use just the pigtail connection instead of the white wire connection? Also does anyone know what gap I should set my NGKs to once I install the ZX dizzy and the MSD 6A?? What about the timing, stock on my 1973 240Z ( with emissions) is 7degrees. But now I have a cleaned up 240z balance tube, SU carbs, electric auxillary fuel pump, K and N air filter, monza exhaust, 260 downpipe, in combination with the MSD 6A, blaster 2 coil, and ZX dizzy.

You can gap them as much as 60 is you want but I'd run them about 50 general purpose driving.

I'm putting out over 50,000 volts so I can get away with the 60 gap on my NGK's.

My Mallory Unilite does'nt have marks so I don't know what my timing is at, at the moment. Sorry!
