NO hi beams ... I did search

MAYHEM

Recommended Posts

OK This is what I've done. I did the relay upgrade 2 relays, 1 for the Hi and 1 for the lo beams. I'm using the connector at the rt side of the engine to get my 12 v and my Hi and Lo switching. I did a voltage check and there was no power for the hi side coming out of the connector. Sooo, I removed and cleaned the Hi Lo switch. It does "click", I also cleaned the contacts on the little see-saw thingy. Used emery cloth on every thing that had a contact. Still nothing on the Hi beams. So what else can I check? or if need "jump" wires to get the hi beams to work. Also for troubleshooting, I hit the power side of the Hi relay with battery power and they came on.

Yikes!!!

Where to begin?

That you're using part of the standard wiring harness to "get your 12v" while still using "the relay upgrade 2 relays" tells me that you have some SERIOUS cross-connecting going on.

Which model/year are you referring to? That will help define which wiring diagram to use.

That you had the lights come on when you powered the power side of the Hi relay says again that something is cross connected.

Sorry about forgetting the year. 77 and I'm useing this setup http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/relays/relays.html . The only deveation for the wiring is that I using the original harnes to supply the power. I'm not running it off the alternator. I did'nt think that would that make a differance.

Thanks in advance

Actually, the problem lies in that the Daniel Stern lighting switches the SOURCE of POWER to the lights to actuate the lamps. That is, GROUND is constant.

The Z on the other hand, switches GROUND to actuate the individual bulbs.

Here's a wiring diagram that might help:

follow that high beam wire from the engine compartment into the car. Follow it al the way to the switch. Double check the output side (hi beam) of the switch. Remember that an ohms meter is your best friend.

It can only be 1 of 2 things. The switch or the wire. Wire, you can replace or run new. Switches--work or don't work, can be fixed or replaced. It's a simple problem that just takes a little time. One of us has your switch if you need a replacement.

At least you're in the right place for answers and parts.

Dave.

Thanks for everyone input.

EScanlon, that being said. My lo beams do work. I'm using H4 lights which required me replace the stock recepticals with Hi temp ones. There are 3 wiires on those sockets Red, Green and Black. I have the black grounded to chassis and I ran my own wire to the relays. And the grounds on the relay are to chassis too.

I'm truly sorry for not mentioning that earlier.

Zs-ondabrain, I'll look into doing an ohms check tonight at work.

I modified the Daniel Stern Lighting design to work with the Zcar. You'll find it at http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/HeadlightRelays/JudkinsRelay.htm.

OK SteveJ and everyone. Looking at the above diagram from SteveJ, I have a question. I have NEW headlight recepticales with 3 wires. Green, Red and Black. I am not using any OEM harness from the headlights to the relays. Please direct my on the location of the wires. I don't think the black wires I have grounded should be, am I correct? If not can I use them as the "new" fused wire going to the Alt? I have the green wires going to 30 in the Lo relay and Red to the 30 to the HI relay. Sorry for silly questions but wirin is my mojor weakness.

This may be overly detailed, but I don't want to leave things out.

StockHeadlightWiring.jpg

Above is a schematic of the headlight circuit. I omitted the fuses for clarity.

As you can see, the headlights themselves are between the headlight switch and the high/low beam switch.

So, if you're tapping into the old right headlight socket for power for your relays, you would have the terminal from the red wire connected to the 86 pin on the relays. On the low beam relay, the red w/ white stripe would go to the 85 pin, and on the high beam relay, the red w/ black stripe would go to the 85 pin. That should have your relay signals straight. Now you'll need to wire your new headlight sockets. You can do this more than one way. I'll just throw out one suggestion.

Run two wires off the positive lead of your alternator. Install 10 AMP inline fuses on the wires and connect the end of one fuse to the 87 pin on the low beam relay and connect the end of the other fuse to the 87 pin of the high beam relay. Run two wires off the 30 pin on the low beam relay to the wire on the left side of the replacement sockets. Run two wires off the 30 pin on the high beam relay to the right side of the replacement sockets. Run the black wires to ground.

If this doesn't work for you, I suggest that you either follow the wiring as described in the other link or search this site for the person selling the relay harness adapters.

Woo Hoo!!! And then there was light. After going over it again and NO light light comming on. I took the two wires off the positive lead of the alternator, and hooked them straight to the + side of the battery. and removed the grounds from the relays position #30...... And volia !!! Light Hi and Lo. Thanks to everyone. Thanks SteveJ for the above diagram it helped.

Cheers
