Anyone heard of Magnaflow or Excelerator Mufflers

Recommended Posts

I am in the hunt for a performance exhaust system to go with my Pace-Setter, Jet-Hot coated header. I wanted a Dynomax turbo muffler and 2 1/2" pipes. Unfortunately, my preferred shop burned down. The runner-up shop carries Magnaflow and Excellerator. Anybody have experieince with either of these?

I have not run accross a shop that handles Dynomax yet. I thought Dynomax was fairly common. Is that a mail order only brand?

Thanks,

Marty

I have the XLERATOR muffler on both of my Z cars and it's fine. I'm using it in two totally different applications and am very satisfied with it. The 75 Z has a 350SBC,2 1/2 " exhaust with a 24" Thrush flow through "cherry bomb" type muffler in the trans tunnel to act as a resonator and the Xlerator muffler. The exhaust is quiet under normal driving (I'm 56 and don't like loud exhausts), but with a "throaty" tone.Under hard acceleration it opens up but is not annoying. I also used a similar set up on my 76 RoadZter. Engine is the L28 with SU's, MSA coated headers and 2 1/4" exhaust with the Thrush in line and Xlerator out the back. Again the exhaust is quiet at normal driving . I've had the exhaust on the V8 Z for 3 years and was pleased enough with it to use it this year on the RoadZter. Hope this helps. AL

Thanks Al,

Sure it helps! I had not heard of them before. How well does it fit in the stock muffler location. I am hearing that it should not be longer than about 16 1/2" back there.

Muffler body measures 14" long. On the V8 Z I have the MSA fiberglass bumper and body kit,so the muffler is not visible from the rear. On the 76RoadZter, I have the 240 Z bumpers, so muffler shows a few inches below the rear valance. Some black hi temp paint makes it disappear. AL

Marty , I bought my Dynomax from Summit . I have it attached to a 2 1/2'' mandrel bent piping . The only thing is a resonance at 1500 to 2K . It can get annoying the addition of a small glasspac near the tyranny area will eliminate it. One thing about the glass PAC '' cherry bomb '' type , they use a louver type of perforations in the internal pipe and it extends into the flow of the 2 1/2 internal pipe reducing it down and causing back pressure . If your intentions are to have a full flowing system , go with a RACE type of glass PAC . If you just look down the inside of them you will see what I mean . My Z with the 280 engine and the Dynomax has a low rumble note at normal rpm and driving , like a V 8 . When I put my foot into it it is laud . I haven't installed the glasspac as yet . One hint that was passed on to me from Dynomax , to determine where to place the glasspac . Is to put some masking type on the pipe from the collector to the first bend . Start the engine and run the RPM up until you hear the resonance and hold it for about 30 sec or so , then shut it off and see where the scorched tape is , that is where to install the muffler . That's interesting, what's the theory behind this. Did you mean "install the muffler where the scorching ends toward the rear?"

What they told me is where you see the scorched tape when you first look at the pipe , this is the optimum place to put the muffler for resonance control. In all likelihood it will be not too far back from the collector. So starting with a cool exhaust pipe , when the part that heats up to the point of scorching the tape, form then on of course the rest of it will then heat as well . Of course if the space is a problem , which it is on these cars, adjust accordingly. This information was given as a guideline . Gary

On my 79 280zx, I have a msa header, high flow cat, and a custom stainless 2 3/4" piping, with a Magnaflow exhaust. It is pretty loud when you get on it, but it has a good sound to it. Especially when you drop it down into 3rd gear coming down a steep hill. Everyone seems to stare to see whats coming down the road. Right now my motor is pretty much stock, just with a cold air induction on it. Just make sure you have a good stereo system if the excess noise bugs you!

Magnaflow and XLerator are made by the same company. It is the same muffler. The XLerator is slightly less in quality while the prices are comparable. This info comes from my local custom muffler shop. He'll order whatever you want and build the exhaust one-off. I have opted for a s/s Magnaflow 14" resonator and 14" straight-through muffler for my 240Z. I'm building my system out of mandrel bent 2.5" 304L throughout. The header is a old school s/s JanSpeed 6-2-1 2" collector flared to 2.5". All of the piping and clamps were purchased at www.verociousmotorsports.com. I have close to $900 in this when completed! Crap, that's lots of $$$. It should last 10 times longer than a mild steel system.
