Hi guys (and girls?),

I've been shopping for a new steering wheel lately due to the deteriorated condition of mine and I had a few questions that the search funtion has been able to help me with yet. The wheel I'm currently looking at is a 13 1/2" Grant wheel with a 3 1/2" dish.

I'm pretty sure I want the smaller size (I'm 6' 3" and I want a little more space for my knees and elbows) but I wondering if anyone knows if the 3 1/2" dish will bring the wheel closer to me or not. I'm trying to keep it the same distance away or bring it just a little bit closer. Thanks.

FWIW, I called American Stitches and their price for a re-do of a 280-Z steering wheel was $297...a lot of dinero in my opinion. I re-did my own wheel for the price of some liquid electrical tape(I know, it sounds bizarre,but I coated the old rubber with it to stabilize and build it up), some black satin spray paint, and a "Wheelskins" leather cover. Result: a new wheel for less than $40. I also had a Grant wheel and I found it too small to use(for me). These cars are heavy steerers at slow speed and that is exacerbated by larger wheels and tires. The wheel was a bit closer to me, but not much, they use a billet adapter that moves the flatter wheel towards you.

I have though about having the original wheel redone, but the wheel on my other car (the Focus in my signature) has a much thicker rim to it and I really like that feature. Even though its not something I would do, that trick with the liquid electrical tape is pretty neat though, never woulda thought of that one. BTW I like the heavying steering in my Z, it keeps my girlfriend form driving it

The Wheelskins are great, and add a considerable amount to the rim thickness. I've used them on OE wheels with much thinner rims than your 280Z, and like them a lot.
