I just got the carb rebuild kit for my 260Z with new floats. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to get the old floats out. They're the original flat tops that have a bar that holds them in. after removing the screw covering one side I found that it was sunk in to far to get any pliers in to reach it and I can't really pry it out. Has anyone done these yet? I can't find anything in the archives.

Robert, Generally, folks with 260Zs put the flat-top carbs in the circular file and install a set of either 3 screw or 4 screw SUs. It is common knowledge in the world of Z cars that the flat-top carbs are.......well, shall we say JUNK! Sorry to deflate your ballon, but those are just the facts.

Yeah, I doubt there are many people here who have ever worked on the flat-tops, most of them get replaced instead. Can you post a picture of what you see in there? Perhaps we can give ideas then.

You might post your question over at Zcar.com. I think there are a couple of people who are willing to tackle the flattop carbs.

there are a couple of members here running flat top carbs and know how to make them work, they say any way. Post a new thread asking for help with flat top carbs . For your information back in '73 and maybe in '74 . The dealers when they had a customer that complained laud enough and long enough would pull the flat tops and install SUs . So maybe you can convince your parents to concede and allow you to pull the boat anchors and install a set of round tops . If you are concerned with originalality keep the old carbs for show. The round tops will bolt right up to the existing manifold . You will need the piece of linkage that fits between the carbs and the the earlier air cleaner as well. The engine will run much better with the SUs and you will find them to be much easier to work with . Gary

Robert,

I have yet to start working on my flat tops so I can't truthfully say, but can you knock the bar from one end so it come out the other? I don't know if there is anything stopping this, but I thought I would at least drop the idea by you.

Cheers

Ian
