Flat top carbs

When I once rebuilt my flat tops, I had the same problem on the front carb. I had to use a small jewelers screw driver and somewhat pry it out. It ended up getting bent up a little bit and I had to spend some time straightening it out. I believe you must remove the floats to get to the needles out.

It sounds like the pin that holds the floats in is frozen, it will require a little persuation to free up.

A word of advice. Once you have the floats in be 150% certain that the level is correct. If to low the mixture will be to lean, likewise to high-to rich.

You must get this right first time (unless you enjoy pulling carbies, of course)!

For cleaning I used an ultrasonic cleaner. It was the only method I could find that could get into all those nooks & crannies, I guess if you have time then soaking in carb cleaner, blowing out under air pressure will eventually get the same result.

I'm not sure if any differences exist between LHD & RHD Flat Tops, so any help that I'm offering is for the RHD version. There is another member on the list (from the US) who re-built his, search my posts and you should find more info.

I won't be back online until Monday (Australia Time), which is your Sunday PM.

Good luck and feel free to ask any more questions.

The needles are fitted to the piston. You can easily remove these with the carbs still on the manifold. I think you mean the float tap ( for want of better words, I doing this from memory)!. To change these over you do need to remove the float.

SUCCESS! :D After soaking over night in berrymans' and WD-40 I was finally able to pry them out with a little persuasion from a pair of wire cutters (very carefully). It was the pin/rod whatever that held the floats in. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. As soon as I get the other one rebuilt, hopefully with less hassle since I know what I'm doing now, I'll finish getting the interior back in and perhaps another Z will be roaming the streets again!!!
