IGNORED

difficult cranking

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Am currently putting the Z back together as it needs to be moved again. Its been sitting for almost 3 years in the garage.

Upon leaving, I didnt prep it for storage as I didnt plan on being away for so long.... Yep poor form. Anyhow, I read up on post storage procedures, and came to turing the engine over by hand. When I have no spark plugs in, it turns over just fine, using the socket wrench. When I put the plugs back in, I am getting major resistance at certain intervals/spots! It doesnt feel like a mechanical/hard resistance as it gradually gets tighter throught the rotation, then easier again.

These point/s have also prooven too much for the starter.!! Yes smoke from starter solenoid is bad juju.

Took out plugs again, still turns freely when cranked by hand, cam is turning good, etc. Only thought is a different set of spark plugs???

Any ideas >?

Check the timing , if the engine turns OK with no plugs . Maybe your to far advanced . I don't' know if you have been doing any adjusting of the timing . Other than this , ??? Gary I just reread your question . You are feeling the resistance while turning with a spanner and with out plugs ? If this is so , I don't have a clue . you said the cam and the valve train is all OK , sorry . let us know what you find is causing the deli-ma so we can all learn . g

if i'm reading this right.........

are you sure you're not just feeling the normal compression resistance?

with the plugs in, you hopefully will be building up compression pressure in the cylinders. as you rotate past TDC in each cylinder and the exhaust valve starts to open, you should feel it get easier to turn since the pressure is released. rotate further and pressure builds again.

if this is what's happening, it sounds normal (and desireable since the resistance=compression) to me.

I would try this:

Take plugs out, ground the wires, and try to crank it with the starter. If the starter spins it, at least you know it is capable of spinning the motor.

Then, I would put it all back together as it should be and try again.

Could be a lot of things, like a bad starter, weak battery, etc.
