lonetreesteve Posted July 4, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 4, 2006 I keep a pretty close eye on these when go up for auction on Ebay and if I remember correctly, about a year ago or so a set went for a little over $1,200.00. The general member consensus was that they sold for a record price. Well, here's a set that has already surpased that $1,200.00 milestone: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=270003260875&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT
Arne Posted July 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2006 Oh Lord! Now what do I do? The set I lucked into a while back are almost that good. There is a dime-sized spot of corrosion on the back side of one of mine, otherwise they are the same as this set. I knew I could make a tidy profit on mine, but had no idea that these were worth THAT much. Here is the post with pictures of mine...http://classiczcars.com/forums/showpost.php?p=175684&postcount=
lonetreesteve Posted July 5, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted July 5, 2006 Arne,If you cleaned your hub caps up a bit they could probably fetch a good amount of $ on Ebay!
Arne Posted July 5, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 5, 2006 Yeah, apparently they could. I have cleaned them since the pictures in the other post, they look virtually the same as the ones in the current auction. And I could certainly use the cash to finance more important parts of the project. But if I sell them, I have to accept the fact that I will never have a set like this again. First, because finding them in this condition is becoming more difficult all the time, and second because I couldn't make myself pay what they are apparently worth to other people.I guess I'll have to see what this set closes for, and make a decision then. I could always e-mail the second high bidder and offer him mine...
AZ-240z Posted July 5, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 5, 2006 I've been watching this auction, also. I have a NOS set, three of whch are still sealed in brown Nissan paper and plastic and have yet to see the light of day for the last 35 years. I am fantisizing what these would fetch, if I were to sell them, which I won't. As values continue to rise on these rare parts, so goes the value of our preciously cared for cars. Ya gotta love it.Dan
lonetreesteve Posted July 5, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted July 5, 2006 Arne,Be careful.....Ebay has some very strict rules about soliciting to other Ebay members. If I were you I would list them as soon as possible and there is enough time left (about 2 days at the time of this posting) on the other set for the people who have been out bid to bid on yours. Good luck!
Arne Posted July 5, 2006 Share #7 Posted July 5, 2006 I certainly understand, Dan. Like I said, if I were to sell mine, I have to write off any chance of having them ever again. And even if I never put them on the car, it will be nice to know that I have them.

Good luck!Yeah, I know. If I were to do that, what I'd offer would be to start a new auction with a buy-it-now at his price. There are ways to do it and not fall afoul of eBay's rules. xray Posted July 5, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 5, 2006 Just an observation....After the $1200 set last year, several additional sets went for considerably less (but still a lot for wheel covers), and their condition was only slightly less pristine than that $1200 set. I don't think coattails are your friend here and I would not recommend listing them so soon after this auction closes. Seems like it's a two horse race between implants430 and bigdaddybroker since lakesidemotorcars maxed out at $665. Of course, things could change, but I would suggest that you wait another six months, and let all the folks who think they missed out on the current auction get REAL paranoid, then drop your set out there with a good reserve.$0.02,Steve
lonetreesteve Posted July 5, 2006 Author Share #10 Posted July 5, 2006 Last January my son and I sold a nice set on Ebay, not as nice as the subject, but still in great shape and we got $620.00 for them (see pics). Arne, I still think it would be a good idea to try to ride some of the frenzy that's going on right now. Just set a reserve that you can live with and go for it. Might as well, while things are hot right now!
240znz Posted July 5, 2006 Share #11 Posted July 5, 2006 OMFG!!!!! You guys pay massive US$ for these caps. A mint set here in New Zealand were sold for about US$150 about 8 months ago.Yep, good advice is to list them now with a reserve that your very happy with. That's my 3.2752 cents worth (that's 2 cents US$)
Arne Posted July 5, 2006 Share #12 Posted July 5, 2006 OMFG!!!!! You guys pay massive US$ for these caps.Actually, no. I absolutely would not, will not, and did not pay a stupid price for hubcaps. In fact, I am too embarrassed to admit in public how affordably I bought my set. Suffice it to say that even if I only got $600 for my set, I'd be making a big profit. But it's not all about money. (Or at least, not yet.) It's about having something rare and unique. I'm not saying I'll never sell mine, but there's no hurry to make that decision, either.
