July 9, 200618 yr comment_173976 The Conquest tranny will bolt to the Maxima bell housing.Don't you need all lthe electronic sensors & stuff to get it to work (i.e., the overdrive & lock-up?)IMO, The '83 Maxima with the 4th gear AND o/d would be the way to go. I don't intend to do much drag stuff; mostly highway cruising. the 4.11 diff would be something for later on.Just for kicks, what would estimate the cost of this conversion to be? about $800, $1000, $1200, $1500?thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20672-automatic-transmission/?&page=2#findComment-173976 Share on other sites
July 9, 200618 yr comment_173978 I think I can confirm how good the 3N71B trans is. Mine was finally rebuilt at 110k miles, when the reverse refused to grab. I used it for some (1/4 mile sprints), a few autoX runs, and if I need to, I'll keep it in 2nd to get on the freeway (at 60+ MPH). Sounds cool going 60 in 2nd gear. Just need some engine fixes, because there's not much power until you get to 2500 RPM. Will- I thought you were going to do the maxima trans swap. Did your new baby nix that? July 9, 200618 yr comment_173981 TomoHawk,I am still working on the chassis/bodywork, and roughing in the engine swap in another car-and fighting with life for landing rights! I have not entirely made up my mind about what tranny to use-someof the info from Beandip has made the choices a little more dear. Untill I hear from Jatco about other AODs that are direct bolt ups to the L-series bellhousing(if they choose to return my communications), I will wait until the tranny is needed to put the car underway to buy one. I am probably going to put in a 4spd manual(Just completely cleaned, R&R'd everything-it looks better than new!) to begin with and use my roughing in car to be certian that everything comes in and out where it is supposed to before putting it into the refinished car. I am almost considering checking into what it would take to make a 700r4 bolt up-after I drain the pond, shoot the alligators, and get the car on the road...Will Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20672-automatic-transmission/?&page=2#findComment-173981 Share on other sites
July 28, 200618 yr comment_176361 I've got one on whidbey island that came out of a 81 turbo. Worked good when I pulled it to put in a 5 speed. I've got all the parts you'd probably need. Flywheel torque converter etc. drive shaft all the way back to and including an R200 rear end with cv joints. email me at krs@whidbey.com if interested. I've got three ZX, Z31 and Z32 if you have anything to swap. September 6, 200618 yr comment_181274 Since you are in Redmond and I'm on Whidbey Island not much of a drive. It came out of a 81zxt and was working fine. I just like playing with the gears so I put in a 5 speed. let me know. krs@whidbey.com. Like to see somebody get some use out of it. Might have to adapt the driveshaft to your rear end Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20672-automatic-transmission/?&page=2#findComment-181274 Share on other sites
September 6, 200618 yr comment_181356 Maybe it was 26th that was working on a Maxima O/D swap... I'm definitely going to do the swap on my car so I can to to the Daytona Nationals in Oct., but I just have to decide to do it either before it snows, or in the spring. That plus finding a place that will do "custom work" which most trans shops don't like to do- they just want the fast & easy jobs. September 16, 200618 yr comment_182688 I did the swap of the Maxima 4speed O/D auto into my wife's 280Z. The complicated parts were the rear crossmember and exhaust routing. What was amazing to me is that I was able to use the existing driveshaft. Everyone says it needs to be shortened, but the auto tranny is around 1cm longer than the 5-speed.I'll post what pictures I have of the work if anyone is interested. September 16, 200618 yr comment_182719 Drove my auto '73 down to dallas the other morning with out a hitch.70 to 75MPH, at between 3300/3600 RPM with 3.54 rear. Not the quickest car around, but runs good. Still getting about 20+ MPG. Have a couple of late 5-speeds in the garage waiting for the swap, but I just can't seem to get motivated. Hell, I already put the manual trans pedal combo, clutch master cylinder, and hydro lines in, so I'm half way there. Swapped out my '72(4 to5-speed) a month ago, so it's kinda nice having both and auto, and a stick with O/D. Building an old school(70's USA mod) project out of my orange auto '72, and think I'll leave the auto in it. Going with a 2900 stall converter, with a Turbo Tom L-28. Got some perfect 14x8 E/T slots with BFG 265/50/14's and 245/50/14's. Street flares from MSA should finish it off. Any thoughts?'72 white restored(5-speed)'73 silver auto driver'72 orange auto project Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20672-automatic-transmission/?&page=2#findComment-182719 Share on other sites
