July 6, 200618 yr comment_173575 Whoo Hoo! The only 3-speed vote!My car came with a 3-speed auto and I find it does well for cruising. I'd actually prefer a 4-speed, but I'm a bit too...stout, and can't really move my legs enough under the wheel to permit a clutch.I'd just like a good working auto tranny. The only part I have of that so far is the "auto" part. July 6, 200618 yr comment_173576 Me personally I voted for 5 speed manual not only because thats what I have in my Z, but because you gotta love that extra gear on the highway :D Yeah, I'm a manual trans. guy. Not only they are much more fun to drive, but they do make the Z quicker because they are lighter, you do get better gas mileage with a manual (every little helps with the prices now days ) and another thing I love is that they are a hell of a lot easier to work on  Just my opinion. July 6, 200618 yr comment_173594 real men drive a manual.women drive autos. I resent that, not all women drive autos. My first car was a 1976 manual Fiat X19 that my dad got me for my 16th birthday. I learned to drive in that car, and had great fun chirping the tires in second gear (with a whopping 75 hp). I then went on to drive the hell out of my 1972 4 speed 240. I have an automatic 71 240 now and it is very difficult to keep from putting a manual in it, but I want to keep it original. Either way, it is what ever the driver prefers, whether female or male. July 6, 200618 yr comment_173599 have you ever noticed the car sounds better with a manual ? maybe its just me. I have the stock 4 speed if I would ever need to replace it my choice would be a 5 speed Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20675-which-would-you-rather-haveand-post-why/?&page=3#findComment-173599 Share on other sites

July 6, 200618 yr comment_173616 Except for the ability to rev the engine while you let out the clutch for an awesome holeshot, the newer automatics are just as goos as any manual-shift tranny. You can even convert it to full-manual (at least for Chevys/Fords/Mopars). Micheal Schumacher's F1 car has an auto trans! ( with a manual shift setup). And with an auto, you don't have the annoyance of having to constantly shift, like when you got a lady in with you, or on long trip, or in traffic. No clutch to wear out during gridlock, either. After I get all the other stuff fixed or done on my car, I'm going to put in a Maxima 4 spd O/D auto, maybe with a manual valve body.JMO... July 6, 200618 yr comment_173633 Automatics are fine for certain purposes. I agree with those posters before me that point out the benefits of saving your clutch in city driving. Try driving a clutch in San Francisco with some jackas s tailgating you on some of those uphill starts...but then again, in mountain/curvy driving situations, the stick is preffered. As to the auto-stick slushbox shift by wire business-I have a Mitsubishi Montero LTD with the "Sporttronic" manumatic. There are only two situations where I actually use the "stick" mode-long hill descents (to save the brakes) and to slow down without engaging my taillights (lest the cop notice). Other than these two times, the stick mode is just not engaging. A true stick (be it 3, 4, 5 or 6 speed) allows its user so much more control. It has also been my observation, after driving across both this country and Mexico in both a standard and auto, that one stays more focused on driving when the stick needs tending. Don't get me wrong though. Just like Cruise control, I think automatics are great, just not all the time. July 7, 200618 yr comment_173727 A sports car should always have a stick. Automatic transmissions, even the +/- shifting, isn't accurate enough. I always want to control when and how much clutch to apply.... for me, this only applies to sports cars. A daily-driver or a SUV/truck should have an automatic tranny. July 9, 200618 yr comment_173911 I definitely agree with Mike on this one, manuals are the way to go for any sports/weekender car and auto's are best suited for daily drivers. I have a manual in my current daily driver and while I do enjoy it, its also alot of work sometimes when youre just trying to get to work or something like that. Therefore I think my next daily driver is going to be an automatic. July 10, 200618 yr comment_174106 What, no vote for the 4-speed manual? I voted for 'whatever came with the car' only because the 4-speed that came with mine isnt there.Zak Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20675-which-would-you-rather-haveand-post-why/?&page=3#findComment-174106 Share on other sites
