Why not an RB25 single turbo?

It depends what you like. Both motors can bring you difficulties during the installation, but other than that, they're two different worlds. Everybody will tell you that the V8 is about raw power and torque, while the SR20 with its aluminium block, which is shorter than the L28's, has less outright power, but could help you transfer more wight to the rear, if that's what you want. When I was new to the Z world I was surprised how easily the V8 could be transplanted there, in comparison to other small sports cars, not necessarily Japanese. In contrast, the SR20 and the Z can be a great combination in terms of handling, because the iron block V8 are just much heavier (if it's not a Buick/Olds/Rover aluminium V8 or any member of the Chevy LS family). If I were you, I wouldn't take any of these motors - the FJ20ET is a nice older motor with an indestructible iron block and magnesium head, and has a turbo thrown in for a good measure. The parts availability is another thing, there just aren't many around.

SR20DET is harder to install, more expensive, and makes less power (stock and modified).

The iron V8 with aluminum head/water pump/intake and all that weighs 40 lbs more than the stock 6. Just don't get the iron block/head/intake and the weight isn't too much of an issue.

The LS1 or LS2 is supposed to be 40 lbs lighter than the old version, so that puts it right about where the stock 6 is weight-wise. The trans is heavier, so there will still be a 50 or 75# weight gain with the LS. You'll also more than double the stock hp and torque, and guys are getting mileage in the high 20's due to the .5:1 super overdrive on the T56, cruising on the freeway at 1100 rpm.

If you use the JTR (www.jagsthatrun.com) setup or the John's Cars LS1 setup, the weight is moved back and this results in losing a couple percent of weight off the front and gaining it in the rear, usually get something like 48/52 after a swap.

Check www.hybridz.org for more swap info. Lots of guys with V8's and a couple with SR20DETs as well, as well as L28ET conversions, RBs, 1JZ's, all kinds of stuff. Just SEARCH before you start asking. I can recall at least 4 or 5 threads on which is better, SR20 or V8.

With a V8 you will probably want to reinforce the chasis due to the torque output so there is some work there and added weight, but no mater what the motor is, stiffening the chasis is not a bad thing. There is plenty of potential in the L28 too. The turbo L28 can make a lot of power. I have a N/A L28 that makes good power and is great to listen too with triples and a bigger cam ect... You can also bore and stroke to a 3.2 litre. Lots of options, in the end it comes down to what you want to do with the car. The type of motor you run can greatly effect what class you will race in if you are into racing. Decide what type of driving you are doing and then decide the type of motor you will run.

suppose it all depends on what you want info i have locally was a a guy running a sr20 in a 200sx which with major work was pushing 527 hp on dyno

but didnt last a rally out he found 500hp was the limit for std crank even though he was running good rods upgraded turbos big dollar pistons but he reckoned he could get it to last with custom crank but had already spent mega bucks to get to this level

for me i reckon the chev ls1 is the pic at the moment 400 hp is easy and still relaible and reasonable economy plus if you want more its all avliable off shelf

would recomend hybrid z for more info on conversions
