Gas Tank Cleaning

I'm finally going to drop the tank on my sons '77 280Z and get it cleaned. I've been fighting hesitations and such ever since we bought the car. I know that some here have used a product to re-line the tank. I think it's POR 15 or something close. I've found a radiator shop that will do it for $125 which includes cleaning the inside and re-lining it and also cleaning the outside and spraying it with a black material. Is this a good price since the kit on the internet is $65? I figure it beats the hassle of me working on the tank myself for a week. Also, are there any tricks that I need to know before dropping the tank?

Not a big project really , I just used the fuel pump to pump out any fuel that was in the tank . Just disconnected the fuel line in the engine bay and used a long length of hose to a 2 gal can . I used the gas in my other vehicle. I put the rear wheels on ramps to have plenty of room to work under the car and just removed the tank . I did use a length of 4 X 4 on my floor jack to lower the tank but it is not heavy when empty . this was only because it was more convenient . Gary

I would seriously wonder about the quality of the products they would use-see if they will allow you to research them.

That sounds like a great price. I had a local Z specialty shop do mine ('77 280) and it was a lot more than that.

I will get another quote from another radiator shop on Monday. What kind of prices have people here paid for gas tank cleaning and re-lining ?

In Placerville, CA I got a quote for less than 50 bucks just to boil the tank.

If I were you, I would use POR-15 and line it myself after having a professional boil the tank. That way, YOU KNOW what's going into the tank, you KNOW that the directions were followed (hopefully correctly) and you KNOW that there won't be any surprises!

And, after the lining is finished, a spray-on laquer paint will work well for the tank exterior.

Or splurge and go whole hog and do the outside of the tank with POR and their Top Coat Satin Black. That way you know it's protected to the best known possible protection.
