July 25, 200618 yr comment_175946 What you want to check for on the E31 is corrosion in the coolant passages. Unfortunately he isn't providing a picture of the bottom so you can't see them. The E31 tends to erode there so that the passages get larger and larger and can eventually cause a leak in the headgasket. July 25, 200618 yr Author comment_175947 I know that was another thing I was going to ask him. But do you notice what color the rust is on the side of the head? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20943-anybody/#findComment-175947 Share on other sites
July 25, 200618 yr comment_175949 I think I'm going to bid.................. What do you think about it Arne?No opinion. As Jon noted, we can't see the water passages. Plus I'm still of the opinion that for a street engine, the difference between an E31 and say... an E88 or N42 probably isn't noticeable.I don't think I'd want to pay all that much for it, regardless. July 26, 200618 yr comment_176045 Forget about the E31. Too much trouble, too much cost, and not enough benefit. If you've got an L24, stick with the E88. If you've got an L28, get an N42. Don't worry, be happy. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20943-anybody/#findComment-176045 Share on other sites
July 26, 200618 yr comment_176047 'Just stick with what you've got man.If it ain't broke don't fix it. Unless the head you've got right now is broken and needs some machining or something don't even bother... Have you even run a comrpession check on all of your cylinders? There wouldn't be any point in trying to squeeze the best compression ratio out of your block if you've got bad compression on your pistons, ya know?'Just thought I'd bring it up. July 26, 200618 yr Author comment_176086 Yeah I have checked the compression and that's why I'm rebuilding my engine. But yeah I have an N42 I guess I can be happy .
