dual exhaust

Someone called me the other day and asked if I wanted a 240Z parts car. All I had to do was go get it. It was about 7 miles from my house. I pulled the exhaust off it and found that it was a true dual exhaust. Does anyone here recognize this setup or is it a custom job. I plan on having it soda blasted and using it on the 240 down the road. The only thing I will change is the mufflers.

I searched for exhaust systems and headers for about 6 months, before i got some off of ebay, and I never saw any like this. I would guess it is a custom job, but I'm not sure.

That header look's pretty unique. AH HA! That look's like the Clifford Research Header. It's mentioned on page 128 of How to Modify Your Nissan & Datsun OHC Engine by Frank Honsowetz. 1 1/2" primaries at 27"-29" long. Cool.

If it's the same company It doesn't look like they deal in Nissan anymore... might be worth a call though.

I had a set of these on my CP 280Z. It came with 18" long stainless megaphones. The racecar had 2.25" pipes dumping into these 4" wide megaphones. No wonder I cannot hear!

I'd replace everything from the header back. Look at the bends from the diff over to the mufflers. Press bent and seriously not good for flow. Might do a dual 2" system with some mandrel bends from JC Whitney and whatever mufflers you prefer. I like the way duals sound, but you might also consider the extra weight they're going to add vs a larger single pipe.

There is nothing prettier then a racing Z with a set of dual pipes pulling 7200 in 5th gear on a long straightaway. WhooHa!

What did the rest of the car look like?

I sold that 240/280Z in 1980. The owner totalled it at Sears Point.

The car was decent. Good glass and sheetmetal. Floorboards had some rust. The motor was complete with the flattop carbs. Interior was toast and it had four chrome rims to go with it. I just don't have the space to keep these kinds of Z's so I gave it to guy who was willing to tow it away after I had taken what I wanted.
