Factory undercoating?

Nutz,

Good question, but you need to be a little more descriptive about what you call "undercoating". The underside of your car may have what appears to be a thick, rippled texture to the painted finish. I have noticed this and although I would not refer to it as undercoating, it is a protective painted finish. Undercoating, in most cases as we commonly refer to it, is black. Your '72 did not come from the the factory with black undercoating. It may very well have a "protective painted finish", but it is not what we would refer to as undercoating.

26th-z,

Thanks for the info. I have exactly what you are talking about. My car is a 72 that has approx 72,000 original miles on it. ( it is pictured on the left)

It had a poor repaint done at some point. The original color was that highlighter yellow. Underneath my fenders, in the wheel weels, and on the bottom of the floor pans the yellow paint is textured and coarse. I was worried about the originality of the finish.

The underbody of the Z was coated from the factory with a black tar type stuff, straight on the bare metal, no undercoat underneath it, This thick tar rippled look coating (If you dont call it undercoating, i dont know what you would call it) was then oversprayed with the color paint. not painted as such. I doubt you would find paint over the top of the tar coating in places like the transmission tunnel above the gearbox.

My car is a 72, and has this undercoating. It washes off back to bare metal with a rag a bit of petrol.

On all of the 240Zs I have stripped the undercarriages of, all had tar based undercoating over (NOT UNDER) the paint-even in the tranny tunnel, and undercoating overspray on the tranny, drive shaft and suspension componenets.

FWIW, my early 260 came from the factory with "undercoating".

The metal underneath was primed or painted a light yellow or beige color.

As can be seen in the photos below all of the hole locations and component mounting areas were crudely masked off with tape before coating. The fenderwell photo shows where some of the tape was blown off when I pressure washed the underside.

There is original body color overspray on top of this undercoating in numerous locations.

I recently stripped the undercarriage of my 1972. Initially it was tar with body color sprayed over it. After using the heatgun/scraper method, there was nothing underneath except a thin primer layer, then metal. Oh, yeah--and rust. Trans tunnel was the same, except for the lack of body color coat.

Todd are you talking about tar or the beige/yellow stuff being the undercoating? Many of the cars I have done have had overspray on the tar, but none of it was from the paint at the factory-even when it was the right color.

Will,

I consider the thick tar coating to be "undercoating". The yellow/beige color is a primer over the raw steel.

On this car, the "tar" layer was definitley applied at the factory prior to painting. There are too many hidden places where the body color is over the tar, like on the spare tire well above the gas tank.

Here are a couple more pics.

This is a 260 not a 240.
