Replacing the exhaust. Info/ideas?

Recommended Posts

I am in need or replacing my exhaust, resonator and muffler. Anyone have any input or ideas on this? I know I can just go to the muffler guy and take what they offer, but wanted some input from the z experts. Any info on magna flow, vforce, etc. Or do I just go get a simple exhaust and muffler setup?

Tx,

Bill

Mine is just a 2.25" pipe all the way back to a flowmaster 40 muffler on the back. Nothing special, but it sounds really good and seems to work just fine. Cost me less than $200 for all parts and labor last summer.

Bill , you didn't mention what else you are running . For a stock L-6 , a 2 1/4'' system is maximum is size . Larger will lower the low end torque. At least this is what I have been told and what I have experienced . Having said that I am running 2 1/2 '' mandrel bent , but it was free so I went with it . In time I will replace it with 2 1/4 '' . I prefer the Dynomax muffler super turbo. It breathes vary well and has a great low sound . I personally do not like the raspy sound of exhaust systems. For a resonator I recommend a Thrush glass pack. They have a perforated inside pipe instead of a louvered one . Louvers restrict the flow . My engine is mildly built . It's a ZX 280 with mild head work and a warm street cam and headers . And again for my setup a 2 1/4'' would be the best. In my view . Some back pressure is needed for good flow and scavenging effect. The larger piping is for top end HP. If you are into racing on the track and need to keep the engine spooled up to the high revs of a hot cam , then the larger plumbing is in order . I know there will be differences of opinion here , this is what makes this web site interesting. Gary

I don't have a Z, but the engine is the same. Gary is right - what else are you running? I have a really mild cam on an otherwise stock engine. Headers and a stainless Fujitsubo system is what I'm using. The headers are three into two and the exhaust is a true two-pipe system. Future upgrades are twin Hitachi SUs. If you're running stock, I'd recommend headers and a low-restriction muffler.

I'm trying to find the best complete exhaust system for my '72 Z (pretty much stock 4-speed, and no big plans for modifications to engine, etc.). I did receive a coated 3 into 2 header and super turbo exhaust from MSA, but am concerned because 1) the mounting flange of the header has a slight warp to it from front to back (MSA says that's normal, and will straighten out when bolting it on (?!), and 2) the rest of the exhaust is 2.5" w/ no middle muffler or resonator, just ending in a Dynomax muffler. I've read many threads complaining about 1) poor fit of these systems (MSA says they've improved them lately), and 2) heavy droning at certain speeds due to straight-through large diameter pipe. I also considered the Monza system from Black Dragon, but they cannot promise they will ever again supply the headers, so that's out. Plus, I have seen many people complaining about poor fit and quality of Monza/Pacesetter systems. Any suggestions?

Find a good local shop, tell them what you want and have them custom build it. Ask the local muscle car and hot rod crowd who does the best exhaust work, and go there. You will get a better fitting system, they can help you select the proper system for sound, and the price will be about the same as the commercial systems.

I thought the 6-2 MSA header was the pacesetter header. If that's correct then you've already seen the fitment issues firsthand. I wouldn't install a header that had a visible warp on the flange. That's just crappy production IMO. I have the 6-1 header from MSA (bought from AZC, but the same thing) and it isn't great either. I had to weld on it before installing because the flange didn't entirely cover the #6 exhaust port. It had a built in leak!

Basically I have come to the conclusion that all of the cheap headers for Z's are crap, and that you need to step up to Nissan Comp's header before they really start to be worth the hassle.

I have 2.5" exhaust with mandrel bends and a Super Turbo, no resonator. It wasn't too loud for me, and mine had a specific rpm range where it really got boomy, I'd say from 1500 to 2000 rpm. I don't normally drive the Z in that rpm range though, so it didn't really bother me. Drove it daily that way for 5 or 6 years, never did have a stereo either... :)

  • 3 weeks later...

i am running 2 1/2" exaust all the way back to a magnaflow 2 1/2 muffler (no cat or resonator) with no mods to the car yet except CAI intake (cheapo ebay). Car is really loud, but awesome at idle. going to add a resonator to reduce noise, my car vibrates around 2-3K not ricey sound either. but too loud for me. anyone know if i should got with a 2 1/4" resonator or 2 1/2" resonator? noise is tooooo loud for me right now. looking foward to installing my NISMO performance headers next week. =)
