I saw this on ebay. I was wondering is it really possible? One SU carb with a turbo?

nup, not possible in my opinion. (that's probably why it was listed)!

Turbo with side draft webber is the usual working solution to the turbo problem, the best being FI!

I've seen a single SU turbo setup before, but forgot where. I don't think it was a "Turbo Tom" setup though.

I am sure it is possable, but I question the ability of the single carb to feed a forced induction engine that in normal aspiration needs two! Since there is no identification on the carb/jetting, it could work if they were setup right, but I would hate to have the only way of finding out be sacrificing a set of pistons or more...

Putting something like this together would not be too difficult-even adapting a zx dizzy isnt much more involved than modifing one to work on a 240Z.

Using the complete exhaust system from a ZX turbo, from the manifold up to to the cat, would take care of the outgoing. Fabricating a "Y" tube to go from the outlet of the turbo to the current carbs(rejetted) would be the most difficult part, but even with what is in the auction, you still have to fabricate some form of air filter and plumbing to connect it to the turbo. After everything was fabbed up, you would have a tuning headache to deal with, but doing the math with a known compressor map and known jets would be easier than the unknowns in the auction.

CROWN Mfg. was one of the first to put a Turbo on the Z.. they used the one S.U. in their set-up. As I recall that was around 74 or 75.

In going through my literature, the pieces in the auction seem to be part of a kit sold by **** Barbour Parts and Accessories For Datsun Z.

Check out the attatched scan from their catalog, some of the pieces pictured are dead ringers.

About a year or so ago, at my friend's shop in Upland, Ca., there was a wrecked 75 or 76 280Z with the 280Z kit in the attachment. I remember discussing it with him. It was complete but the turbo itself was siezed up.

Pretty interesting, I would have never thought.

Well.. looks like my memory isn't too good... Here's a comparison in April 72 Road & Track... on the Crown Turbo vs. Stock vs. the BRE C-Production Z.

I believe we have an IZCC Member, that is also in the Gateway Z Club - that might still be running his Crown Turbo Set-up.

The Draw-through SU turbo set-up has been used in several different cars. There was a 2 lt Roadster in the 80's that was wicked fast using a single SU, in front of the turbo.

The Constant velocity feature of the SU works well in this set up, but you got to play with the needle profile and dome spring rate to keep from running lean !YIKES!
