June 29, 200222 yr comment_9629 As far as I know all of the early gas tanks are the same?I've never seen anything that says they vary in dimensions or capacity for that matter so I recon' your safe.... I'm not 100% sure though.R. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2108-73-gas-tank/#findComment-9629 Share on other sites

June 29, 200222 yr comment_9650 I do know the 280 tanks are larger by almost a full gallon. Not sure about the 260 tanks, the late 260 may have had the same tank as the 280 and the early 260 may be the same as the 240. When they went to FI they may have substituted the larger tank. Any tank from 73 or before should fit your 71 with no problem. Early tanks are 16 gallons, and I believe the 280 tanks are 16.8. July 1, 200222 yr Author comment_9731 thanks for the info...well now that i know that the gas tank will fit my car i just want to be extra sure if i really should change the gas tank..i was already told by the mechanic at the local Z shop that i probably need a new one or to repair my current one...here are the reasons why I think i need a new gas tank...1. found bits of rust or grit in the fuel filter.2. engine seems to sputter and not get enough gas once in a while.3. one of the carbs gets plugged once in a while.what do YOU guys think?the mechanic at the Z shop knows the previous owner of my car and the owner before that one too and said that my car had been stored for about ten years before so most likely my gas tank is really rusty.... July 1, 200222 yr comment_9745 Well, if the rust is only on the inside you might try to have it re-sealed before you go to the trouble of putting another tank on it. There is a company that does this, or you could try a kit from Eastwoods and do it yourself. I think the web-site is www.gastankrenu.com. There is no guarantee another tank from a car a couple years younger than yours is going to be in any better shape inside to be truthful. As long as yours is in good shape on the outside with no bad case of rust or dents, you might want to try repairing yours. Not sure what they charge to do it, but the kit from Eastwoods is not too expensive. And of course, while you have the tank off for repairs or replacement, don't forget to replace the vent hoses while you have it off if they haven't been done already.
