Manual fuel pump filter

My car dosent start yet and I noticed a long time ago that the filter for the manual pump dosent fill all the way even when the car was sort of running, since fuel was making it to the filter and to the carbs I figured it was fine, but sinse the car isnt running I thought I'd check. they are filling half way

I'm running an electric pump currently, and it is the same way. So I think that is normal.

you should have both electrical and mechanical pumps!!! in my case i the filter fills up all the way but then again i have a 260z and i could be different. make sure there is enough gas in the car!!! but a real way to check to even see if its that, is to sprey carb cleaner directally into the carbs(or fuel its just easier because of the hose) and see if it starts!

Have you check the that manual pump actually works? If not, it is pretty easy. If so, does the fuel filter seem to circulate fuel while you are cranking the car over? If not, you might have a fuel line leak. I had this issue and while the pump was working there was an air leak in the fuel line that was not allowing fuel to get to the carbs.

The '73 also has a filter inside the electric pump. While on the track my car needed both pumps working. The electric pump was uhooked, it was fine for the street but under load in the straights it would starve for fuel.

I use a filter before the electric pump, the filter in the eletric pump and the filter before the mechanical pump.

btw, I have a 2.8 running the round top su's.

By 1/2 way are you speaking of the float bowls of the carbs ? Because they shouldn't be filling up full. if the floats are set too high it will dump fuel into the carb and flood the engine . I am running a electric pump only, and there is an air pocket at the top of my filter also . As was mentioned before if you can squirt a little gas into the float cambers through the over flow hoses , then try to start the engine . If it starts and dies this is telling you the pump is not getting gas to the carbs . If this has no effect then look to the ignition and have you checked to see if you are getting spark at the plugs ? Gary
