electronic fuel injection system

Can anyone help with a problem I'm having with my (280z) electronic fuel injection system? There's something that I'm just not getting to or seeing, and this is even after reading between the lines of the service manual. I need someone who's worked on them and/or is familiar with my problem, which we can talk about. Email me!

Thanks! Ron

My Datsun is a '77. Forgot to mention that. The problem is running too rich and fouls the plugs. It won't accelerate past 2000rpm; the engine stalls. I replaced most all of the electronic and FI parts. It has good compression and clear exhaust. There's also a fluctuation in fuel pressure; it usually stays at 35lbs. psi at injectors.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Ron

Almost sounds like you have a blockage in the fuel line somewhere. Does the fuel presure stay at 35 when you have it under a load and run about 2000 to 3000 RPMs. Check your fuel lines to see if they are clear. You might think about draining your tank and seeing what comes out.

I have had the tank cleaned. The fluctuation in the fuel pressure is when the engine is cold. When it gets to about 2000rpm it settles down. Under a load, the engine quits when it's up to 3000rpm. It could be the fuel lines, so I might have to check them.

The fuel pressure shoud be constant. 36.3 psi according to the FSM, regardless of operating temp. You state

and you also state

Due to the difficulty of diagnosing EFI problems in print, and not wanting to get into a long exchange of emails, your situation begs these questions. Only after I see the answers to them would I be able to figure a direction to go in. That's the beauty of these forums. Others can add in which is something you won't get from emails. Did you replace the fuel pressure regulator? Do you know how to properly check the fuel pressure? What parts did you replace, and why? Are you certain that the components that you replaced are the correct components for your vehicle and that they are in proper working order and that their connections are good? Did you replace the fuel pump and if so, did you use an OEM or aftermarket one? Those questions will do for a start.

Try taking a look at this spot first http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/efisystem/280zfuelinjectionbook.pdf then tell us your problem. Those of use who have the FI or know about FI may just have an idea on how to help you.

Thanks for this manual/book! It's worth it's weight in gold and really has a lot of information I can use. The troubleshooting part is really great. Thanks a lot!
