Using flange bolts with lockwashers

Adam, I think your best bet, to avoid damaging the new paint, would be to use flat washers. If you are concernd about maintaining the torque on the fasteners you might want to visit the website I posted, just so you will feel good about using flat washers. Believe me, I understand your desire to keep the new paint unblemished! Happy hunting!

Actually, lock washers DO function by exerting outward force on the bolt or nut. The "bite" into the mating surface is not, to the best of my knowlege, considered in design parameters. Other lock washer designs do depend on friction, (Star lock washers, for example.)If you are concerned about marring, I would try the nylon washer idea and some Loctite™, as previously suggested.
