August 26, 200618 yr comment_180005 What are you referring to in this picture?Either the strange extra plate under the gas cap neck or the fact that he's wearing flip-flops while working on the car. August 26, 200618 yr comment_180006 So you'll come and do mine for steak and beer?Unfortunately I had to pay someone a lot of money to fix mine (as well as paint the car). August 26, 200618 yr comment_180018 Yeah, it's the dumb, thick, aluminim plate under the fuel filler neck. I'll get to it one day. I'm just afraid of what I might find under there. I can only think of one good reason for it to be there....rust....but there is no evidence of that there or anywhere else one the car. And I'm always wearing flip-flops and shorts cause the weather is so mild here. In fact I only own a few pants and more than a dozen shorts. Don't hate the player...... August 26, 200618 yr Author comment_180025 Enigma, I think it's awesome.Don't let others crush your spirits.... As for the plate? ... That's whacko... 'Gotta be a good reason for it though. Adding extra things, while still possibly dumbassery, could at least be dumbassery with a purpose. It takes tenacity to build something and add it... it only takes a bit of stupidity to remove something and forgot to reattach/put it back on. August 26, 200618 yr comment_180048 I am not sure if this is a case of POD or just the worst autobody shop on the planet (or perhaps both) but I have spent atleast 6 hours chipping bondo off the rear end panels and tearing off Home Crapo galvanized steel that was used to replace rust of the hatch striker panel. :stupid: They did a hell of a job covering it up though because we didn't notice how bad it really was when we bought the car. I have attached an angry photo of me and a chisel. (and although you can't tell, I am wearing flip flops in the photo) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21330-previous-owner-dumbassery/?&page=2#findComment-180048 Share on other sites
August 26, 200618 yr comment_180049 When I swapped my head onto another block, I forgot to connect the pcv valve once. I was sitting there, car started, and I hear this really loud whistling that got worse with throttle. I couldn't find out what it was for the life of me, until I realized that the block didn't have the hose that goes from the crankcase breather onto the pcv valve. Took me a day to finally figure that one out! August 26, 200618 yr comment_180060 Alyssa:While it could be a case of POD or a poor Body Shop, more than likely it's a case of a previous owner / insurance company refusing to pay for the proper repair. Sadly, if the picture and all the bondo you've chiseled off are any indication, the car had been seriously smacked on the rear end. That being the case, the "proper" repair might have entailed a complete set of rear sheet metal, AND the two rear parts of the SIDE rear fenders.....not an inexpensive proposition even "back in the day".You can save yourself a TON of time and grief if you switch to a grinder, not the style used after welding or to shape rigid metal, but the style that uses the grit discs. This is also the style used to "scratch" the metal prior to applying bondo. While you are making headway with the chisel, you might actually venting more frustration than making headway.Don't be mad at the use of bondo, after all it kept your car from being junked years ago.E Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21330-previous-owner-dumbassery/?&page=2#findComment-180060 Share on other sites
August 26, 200618 yr comment_180072 Alyssa:Don't be mad at the use of bondo, after all it kept your car from being junked years ago.EHAHA, yeah you are right. My bf and I are going to do our best to repair it the proper way. With both cars, the silver and the red parts car I think we can do it plus a few replacement parts. We knew we weren't going to be using the rear panels, but we did want to see how far the damage was. there is some slight rippling on the back floor also which worries me. Whatever the case is, I plan to fix it right... not with 1/4" thick bondo. August 26, 200618 yr comment_180073 My 510 had the worst case of pOD. I removed at least 10 lbs of bondo from the rear. It was over an inch thick in many areas. It had metal filler panels that were 1/4 thick steel. They even put filler in the interior and aparently tried to reenforce it with some bright orange mesh crap. They seemed to also mess up the engine they built because it never ran. My current engine is running with the same top end as the old engine had. Some people really should think before they do something, then stop, and think agian, then stop, and think agian, then maybe try it.Oh yeah, I have a 510 for sale, really cheap.
