260z is it a good car?

Good news, the 1974 Datsun 260z will be exempt next year, on Jan. 1, 2003 it will no longer be nessary to smog it for the state of Calif. I just have to make sure it will pass this year and that's it. As soon as it passes I'm going to take most of the smog crap off, let me have all the horsepower that it can provide.:classic:

As long as it passes this year, you can have till Christmas to get all the parts together to do the early carbs swap. Sounds good to me.

Before you make an offer on the car, be sure to check for any hidden rust problems under the car or for any rust repairs that weren't done correctly. Be sure to look under the battery, in the front fender wells near the frame, and check out the floor pans and rails thoroughly. Outer body panels are still available if you find a bit of rust so that is not as much problem like certain chassis areas.

You should be able to find a decent set of used early carbs either here on this site or one of the "other" Z sites. Possibly on Ebay but you never know what you are really buying from there, I'd rather buy from a Z enthusiast.

Prices should be in the 100 to 150 dollars range with linkage and possibly even the earlier intake, which will have less smog ports to plug up.

Yes, the nice laddy at the Bureau of Automotive Repair told me this. It was kinda funny how I found out, I called them on there 1-800 number and at the same time I went on there web site to see if I could answer my own question and as soon as she picked-up the phone I found it under the general questions about the smog rules. So for every year that goes by a year gets knocked off untill the state wants to change the rules again. Very good news for the 1974 and earlier Z's. So rev up your engines and get rid of those smog crap that's on those engines. As of Jan. 1st. though! Does anyone have any sound files of the 240 or 260 engine on? I would love to hear those sounds on my computer. Thank you!

hey patmsb, can you post a link to the page on the dmv web site that has this info...

I found the site http://www.dmv.ca.gov/ but I can't find the page on the site that has the info about the 74 cars being exempt in 2003. I believe you... i just cant find it. :stupid: Let the hunt begin for all 240z zcars and now... 260z cars too... its getting better.

260z's are a little heavier but would make a great v8 swap. put it on non-op and by the time its done it will be exempt.......hahaha this is great news

I have a 72 v8z and a 73 z... the 73 had the same crappy flat top carbs, smog pump and all the crap on it when I first got it. It ran like crap :tapemouth so i did a compression test (155 in # 1 and 160 in 2-6) so I was happy. Took all that crap off, installed 72 su carbs, 72 intake, 2 1/2 in exhaust, header, turbo muffler and bamm runs like a champ. Like night and day. Oh yeah, thanks for the link..

The DMV must have just updated the web site because 2 months ago it was only 73 autos and did not say anything about 30 yr old autos. This is good news

I like it, now I just have to get the person with the car to pass it for me on the sale. Ohh well, one herdle down many to go. Now everyone get that smog junk off there car. I wonder what the performance gain would be?
