260Z Vinyl Roof

Quck question. Did some 260Z have a vinyl coating on the exterior side of the roof?

There was a vinyl roof as an available option on all of the early Z cars.

Yup, it's far from common, but the owners manual even contains a section on caring for the vinyl roof.

My 1980 registered 260 come with a vinyl roof originally, I can tell, apart from a fresh paint exposed, as where the vinyl ends the rust holes start!!

Wkxsports, is your 260 a 2 seater or a 2+2?

They did come out in Oz in the 240Z at least. I have seen them on a couple of 2 seater vehicles but I am not sure about the 260Z.

thanks guys, remember that i havent seen the car in person, these are the only pics that I have so far. Whats worse is that there is a sunroof and not a pretty one either. Although it does not look. The roof looks Vinyl to me or am I mad. Car was reprayed black was blue.

Yeah thats a vinyl roof. Otherwise is wouldnt have the chrome strip extending from where the drip gutter ends above the side quater window to the rear of the guard.

good or a bad thing guys? Is the hatch backcovered in vinyl too? and what is underneath the vinyl? bare unpainted metal?

If you open up the ebay link on the lime coloured 240Z in my previous post there is another photo that shows the hatch covered in vinyl as well.

Whether or not it is a good or bad thing is in the eyes of the beholder. There is no reason for it to affect performance or handling and I have seen vinyl roofs outlast the paint job on the rest of the car.

We will be interested to hear your impressions of the roof when you get your car.

FWIW, my 73Z came from the dealer in Denver with a white vinyl roof. The PO was very proud of it. I thought it was very disco era and as it was lifting in a few areas, I removed it. It had been applied over the original paint(114 metallic brown) and the paint underneath was in pretty good shape except for a inverted "V" of surface rust from the hatch push-button. Unfortunately the PO had had the car painted and it did not match so it went to the body shop for a paint job. I was fortunate in that the rust was only surface and was easy to repair, AND there was no other rust(lucky me). The holes left by the removal of the chrome strips near the vents were mig welded shut and finished off. You can't tell there was ever a vinyl roof on the car. For me that was a good thing. Others might not feel that way...personal preference.
