September 5, 200618 yr comment_181214 My '71 240-Z has a vinyl roof. Can't say if it's original or not, since I've only had the car for a couple of years. But, it's definitly showing some rust issues at the top of the windshield. Here's a pic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21435-260z-vinyl-roof/?&page=2#findComment-181214 Share on other sites
September 5, 200618 yr comment_181225 Quck question. Did some 260Z have a vinyl coating on the exterior side of the roof? The vinyl roof covering has been covered by others but no one has mentioned the ''sun roof '' . The sun roof was not a factory option . Dealers some times installed options like these and mag wheels . In the '70s cars generally came devoid of any ''extras'' , that is American cars . Dealers make money on the extras they can add on . The Z came with a radio , power antenna , '73 and later intermittent wipers and tinted glass. So to add to the cost of the car , Dealers added mag wheel , Air conditioning , vinyl roofs , over rider bumpers , sun roofs , Spoilers and air dams. Also pinstriping and fender strips to protect from door dings . The vinyl roof and sun roof are a vary good possibility having rust issues , especially the roof. Check the floors closely in the foot wells . If the sun roof has leaked , most likely the floors are rusted out. These after market sun roofs are known to be leakers . My '73 HAD a vinyl roof in the past and my PO used metal tape and primer to fill the holes in the roof where the metal strip was attached across the top . I mention the other stuff just to give you background. September 6, 200618 yr Author comment_181301 thanks lads, supposedly the sunroof doesn't leek so fingers crossed. Its a pretty nasty looking job they made. The strange thing is that the vinyl doesnt extend down the ( i don't know what to call them) rear pillars like it does in the pictures you guys posted. September 6, 200618 yr comment_181303 The strange thing is that the vinyl doesnt extend down the ( i don't know what to call them) rear pillars like it does in the pictures you guys posted. Most likely becaus its a dealer option (ie installed after the car was delivered to the country it was sold in), and it was up to the dealer to source a supplier and fitter of vinyl roof coverings. I guess the differences are just because you are in the UK ad they did vinly roofs a little differently to the USA. If you look at the one thats on Ebay Australia its different again. September 6, 200618 yr comment_181314 Good thread. Its good to see different places where the vinyl roof finished. Mine finished above the c pillar badge/vent.Keep an eye on the sunroof for leaks. Since the roof is curved and the sunroof is flat....Mine has a leaky sunroof as well as having a vinyl roof. Going to replace the roof skin to get rid of the sunroof.Keep us posted with your new 260z Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21435-260z-vinyl-roof/?&page=2#findComment-181314 Share on other sites

April 16, 200816 yr comment_244284 Hey there Craig,Regarding that thumbnail of the green Zed.When I first got "Precious", she had a chrome strip running from the rear of the door towardes the rear of the car, roughly where the two colours in the thumbnail merge, and curving around the rear, ending at the edge of the hatch. (On both sides of the car of course). It was held in place by clips through holes in the body. I had it removed and the holes filled when the body work was done 'cause I thought it looked YUK. Unfortunately, I didn't get a pic of it. Has anyone else seen anything like that ????.Rick.:devious::devious: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21435-260z-vinyl-roof/?&page=2#findComment-244284 Share on other sites
