fuel tank and evap. questions

When I fill the tank in my '73 I get fumes inside ,and I know that this is not an unusual thing in Z-cars. What my question is . Has anyone eliminated the maze of hoses that go to the evap, tank and caped them off and vented the cap?? I dont need to worry about emissions, and have driven cars for years that were vented in this way with no problem. I read once that if this is done that you will or might, have air pockets in the tank ,and I find this hard to believe. But dont know for sure because I havent tried it. It just seemed to me that it would be a simple solution to a smelly problem. It seems like a design flaw big time ,venting the fueltank inside the passanger compartment, as a fireman I know I dont want to be french fried if I turn the thing over with all thoes hoses running inside from the fuel tank. I Dont feel right even replacing all the hoses for that reason. If anyone has done this , capped them off and has any input please pass it on . Thanks

Well, if you were to cap off all the lines you would end up with air in the tank. It is possible it will work fine if you were to vent the tank itself to the filler neck like most cars were and still are. I think you will have to make up a hose to make it work as I believe the line that goes to the filler neck comes form the evaporative tank inside the car. If you used one of the hoses near the top of the gas tank and ran it to the filler tube it should work without trouble. Never tried it though, so you may want to wait for someone who has to reply. I'm just trying to apply commen sense to the idea.:stupid: :ermm:

I have plugged all of the vent lines in my '72 exept the one at the top of the tank and ran it to the filler neck. I don't know if there is an air pocket or not, but when the gauge hits "E", I fuel up. The tank the way it is will hold every bit of thirteen gallons. I have never ran it all the way out to see how much it would take bone dry. I still get the gas smell when I fill up, but not as bad as it was before I disconnected the vent lines. I unhooked mine because they started leaking if I filled it more than a half tank. But I've been driving it this was for ten years now without any problem; although some day I will probably take the tank out and do things right.
